What’s in Eddie Thoneick’s DJ box?
12 August, 2010 | 12.43AMIt’s been a busy, busy year for Eddie Thoneick
. You couldn’t toss a set of headphones without hitting a summer compilation featuring his recent hits and remixes. ‘Live Your Life’, his collaboration with Erick Morillo
, is an epic with no end in sight: ‘Live Your Life (Part Two)’, featuring a Nelio, Syrinx & Nyx mix and a new Thoneick dub, came out in July, and just this week he released Part Three, featuring remixes from DJ Chuckie and Antranig, and Thoneick’s new chillout mix.
And that doesn’t even take into consideration his gigs. He’s at Zurich’s Street Parade this weekend, with further dates throughout Europe all summer long, including Pacha, Ibiza on September 17.
We asked him to give us a peek inside his CD wallet, and were treated to a glimpse of lots and lots of bootlegs. Read on for his picks and comments.
Favorite set opener
‘Reach & Live Your Life’ (Edit) [unreleased]. This is actually a new mashup I just did. Combining the edited acapella of ‘Reach’ by Lil Mo Ying Yang and the original mix and my dub of Erick Morillo’s and my new single ‘Live Your Life’. Hypnotic buildup of the ‘Reach’ vocals with a lot of rising winds and FX up to a short acapella peak of ‘Live Your Life’.
Trippiest record
Dek 31, ‘Gnuk!’ [Slized]. Insane record. Killer on the dance floor everytime I play it. In my box for three years now.
Bassline weapon
Sandy B, ‘You Make The World Go Round (Deep Dish Mix)’ [Champion Records]. This one has bass written all over it. I think I never heard such an ear-catching bassline before. Everyone recognizes this one.
Killer vocal track
The Killers, ‘Mr. Brightside’ (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)’ [New State]. I think this one needs no introduction. The best mix Stuart ever did. The vocals are so fantastic.
Oldie that everyone else has forgotten
Bruce Hornsby and the Range, ‘The Way It Is (Brothers in Rhythm Remix)’ [DMC]. This was such a rare record already when it came out. I was glad I got my hands on that one at that time. This is one of the most beautiful tracks ever. A cover but an awesome one!
Secret weapon that only you have a copy of
‘Finally Superstring’ (Eddie Thoneick bootleg) [unreleased]. In the last months I’ve been doing tons and tons of bootlegs and this one is one of my best ones so far. Kings of Tomorrow’s ‘Finally’ Vocals combined with tribal beats and the strings of Cygnus X’s ‘Superstring’.
Closing track for those “one more tune” encores
Radiohead, ‘Creep’ bootleg [unreleased]. Always loved this song. Morillo gave it to me and since then it’s the absolute best final record.
Record outside your usual tempo range
Embrace, ‘Out of Nothing’ [Independiente]. As I was always an alternative and indie music lover since the early years. This one has such an incredible emotional melody! Goosebumps written all over it!
Record you play when you’re in a bad mood
Yeasayer, ‘One’ [Mute/Secretly Canadian]. Again something indie. I do not really play this in my sets, but everyone should check this band out. They are really weird productionwise.
Happiest record
Faithless, ‘Music Matters (Axwell Remix)’ [Ultra]. I think everyone knows this one. Axwell did a fantastic mix of the track which is breathtaking.
Two records that you always play together
Muzzaik ‘Going Underground’ [Stealth] & Eddie Thoneick, ‘I Wanna Freak U (Acapella)’ [Cr2].
This one kicks ass in combination! Can I hear people scream? Yes I do!
The record that will never leave your box
Temper Trap vs Eurhythmics, ‘Eurhythmic Disposition’ (Eddie Thoneick Bootleg) [unreleased]. A bootleg I did and this one really does the damage!
