What’s in Ed Davenport’s DJ box?
17 December, 2009 | 7.31AMLike many techno producers, Salisbury’s Ed Davenport
hop skipped it to Berlin when he was 24-years-old for a life lost in music.
It wasn’t long before the scene’s biggest labels began to release his remixes and productions - so far his cuts have landed on Hamburg’s Liebe*Detail, Glasgow’s Soma, Steve Bug’s Poker Flat Digital, and John Digweed’s Bedrock, to name a few.
Slow-burning techno and trippy tech house are his forte, and his deep techno remix of Len Faki’s ‘Death By House’ on Cocoon in particular was well received. Davenport’s sound is perfectly suited for lengthy early morning DJ sets, which unsurprisingly, will touch Berlin’s infamous Panorama Bar in March, where he’ll play his first ever live P.A..
With Ed Davenport’s new single ‘Life In The Balance’ on Vidlab sounding like warm classic Detroit house, we decided it was time for a peek inside this newcomer’s DJ box to see what makes him tick.
Favorite set opener?
Ed Davenport ‘Warmathene’ (Dub Mix) [Poker Flat Digital]
My new release on Poker Flat Digital ‘Warmathene’ has a dub version that’s great to use early on to heat things up.
Trippiest record?
Cio D’or ‘Pailletten’ [Prologue]
Sleeparchive is possibly the king of trippy these days with his new remix of ‘Pailletten’ by Cio D’or on Prologue.
Bassline weapon?
Echonomist ‘Chute’ (Ed Davenport Remix) [Time Has Changed Records]
I’d have to do a bit of self promotion and say my recent remix for Echonomist ‘Chute’ (Ed Davenport Remix) on Time Has Changed Records. The bassline is a winner!
The record that will never leave your box?
David Alvardo ‘Mayasongs’ [Peacefrog] [LP]
I love every track on David Alvarado’s 2002 album ‘Mayasongs’ on Peacefrog Records, and they each have their place in my sets depending on the place and mood.
If I had to choose one track it would be ‘My Plea’ - classic rolling vibes and dubbed out messiness!
Oldie that everyone else has forgotten?
Ultramarine ‘Hooter v1.25’ (Carl Craig Remix) [Real Soon]
I’m sure lots of people still remember this but I recently re-discovered Ultramarine ‘Hooter v1.25’ (Carl Craig Remix) on Real Soon. This still sounds totally current today and fits in with the broken beat and dub craze. Check out those opening stabs!
One more tune of the night finisher?
Pitto ‘Aphex’ [Phil e]
Pitto’s ‘Aphex’ on Phil e makes for a beautiful, soft end to a night of techno.
Killer vocal track?
Jungle Wonz ‘Time Marches On’ [TRAX]
I’m not a huge vocals fan normally, but I’ve been known to drop Jungle Wonz ‘Time Marches On’ (TRAX Records) from time to time. I love that melancholic yet positive vibe.
Secret weapon only you have a copy of?
Pleasure Pump ‘Over And Over’ (Ed Davenport Edit) [Minimal Records]
An edit I did of Pleasure Pump ‘Over And Over’ on Minimal Records. Messy 90’s madness!
