What’s in Bass Kleph’s DJ box?

What’s in Bass Kleph’s DJ box?

Maybe it makes sense that Australia’s Bass Kleph [a] (aka Stu Tyson) is such a natural when it comes to low-end pressure: if you slapped a musical score over a map of the world, the land down under would fall deep in the bass register. Dude’s just named himself after what comes naturally.

Bass Kleph has been Hoovering up the competition since 2005, when he began recording for labels like Finger Lickin Records [l] and Vacation Records [l]. As he’s shifted from breaks to an eclectic style encompassing tech house, progressive and electro house, his career has jumped into overdrive, with big-tent bookings worldwide following his reputation as a crowd-mover to be reckoned with. And since his remix of Joan Reyes’ ‘Shakedown’ went to #1 on the Beatport Top 100, his phone’s been ringing off the hook, with Cr2, Ministry of Sound, Defected in the House, and more lining up for his tracks.

We asked him to share some of his go-to tunes at the moment; read on for a sneaky peek inside his box.

Favorite set opener

Joan Reyes, ‘Shakedown (Bass Kleph Remix)’ [Fresco]. This track has been rocking the start of my sets since well before it hit #1 on Beatport. It sets a fun vibe, but still with a big sound. It’s a good starting point for me as I usually go quite techy later on. Actually, I have a special intro version of this that samples Dr. Dre’s ‘The Next Episode’. No vocals, just the chords, but it gets everyone so pumped!

Secret weapon only you have a copy of

Well, I would say my bootleg called ‘Weakness For Warp’, made up of D-Formation’s ‘Weakness’ and Bloody Beatroots ‘Warp’, but for some reason lots of people seem to have this now. So I’ll have to choose my new one that samples Funkagenda and Zombie Nation. HUGE!

Trippiest record

Ambivalent, ‘R U OK’ [Minus]. This record cracks me up… and also makes me a little queasy. I think anyone who has done a little partying in their time can relate to this.

Killer vocal track

I don’t really play much full vocal stuff, but my new single is almost entirely made of cut-up vocals. It’s called ‘Hey Ya’ and it’s the follow up to ‘Shakedown’ on Fresco Records [l]. I’m really excited about this one, as it’s been getting the biggest reaction of the night in my sets at the moment!

Bassline weapon

Claude VonStroke, ‘Vocal Chords (Tim Green Remix)’. This is one of those records that you need to hear in a club. The drop is massive!

The record that never leaves your box

DJ T., ‘Funk On You’ [Get Physical]. It doesn’t often fit in my sets anymore, but it definitely gets high rotation in the hotel room whilst getting ready for the night ahead.

Get out of jail free card

Koen Groeneveld, ‘Cumunolimbus’ [Abzolut (Spinnin)]. This track is so simple, yet unique and cool. It’s all about the pre-drop sound! It just makes everyone go crazy. After this, you can do whatever you want.

Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten

Mark Knight & D. Ramirez, ‘System’ [Toolroom Records]. Probably only about three years old now, but still sounds as fresh as if it was done yesterday. Absolutely massive bottom end in this one! These guys have always been on point!

One more tune of the night finisher

Amo & Navas, ‘Raw’. An amazing record that has been huge everywhere I played it. It’s especially good as a last record/encore record because of that long sparse breakdown. The tension is epic!
