What’s in Anthea’s DJ box?

What’s in Anthea’s DJ box?

Anthea [a] is another DJ to have sprouted out of Phonica’s fertile ground in London’s Soho. A job behind the record counter of the small vinyl bastion seems to almost guarantee placement in the capital’s underground club scene, and in the case of Phonica’s former head girl Heidi, it can lead to bigger things.

Shop workers Hector and Simon Rigg have each built a following off the back of their Phonica affiliation, and Anthea is poised to bring yet more kudos to the Phonica family (as if it needed it).

Thanks to a fruitful partnership with London-based producer Alex Cellar, Anthea has had a number of releases on Cecille Numbers, Freak N Chic, and Tuning Spork, and she has played alongside some of the biggest names in techno and house including Zip, Loco Dice, Jay Haze, Derrick Carter, and Efdemin.

With Anthea’s name bubbling up out of London’s club scene - she has DJed at Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Ibiza’s prestigious Space nightclub, and Manchester’s Sankeys - we asked the Phonica lass to let us peek inside her record box to get an idea of how an Anthea set might sound.

Favorite set opener?

Maik Lowen ‘Melina’ [Questions]

Some of my colleagues at work find ‘Melina’ a little cheesy, but I think the vocal makes a statement somehow… It sets the mood for my sets nicely, I love the drums (tribal latin but still underground) and its big, obvious, “let’s party” vibe! Ha hah!

Secret weapon only you have a copy of?

‘Spor 06’ (Anthea’s Edit) [Unreleased]

Every time I play this the boys run to the booth. It’s quite a hard track, and I’m pleased with this edit.

Trippiest record?

SIS ‘Barbarossa’ [Cecille Numbers]

This is not only trippy but beautiful at the same time. Play this at the right time and BANG!

Killer vocal track?

Karen Pollack ‘You Can’t Touch Me’ (Murk Unreleased Dub)

This woman can sing, she has got so much attitude, and I love what she’s saying too!

Sexiest track?

Shonky ‘Mama Queen’ [Contexterrior]

Laid back housey vibes from Shonky, a totally different sound to what he usually makes. It sounds like it was influenced by Dyed Soundorom which makes me like the track even more. The vocal snippets are sexy-eeeeeee!

Bassline weapon?

Federico Molinari ‘Party Faktor’ [Tsuba]

This is a big tune for Federico and it does exactly what it says on the tin - party factor indeed! The bassline rocks!

The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?

David Duriez ‘San France Disco’ [Toulhouse Records]

This track is so simple and groovy - it sums up my sound too - loopy loopy loopy!

One more tune of the night finisher?

Deep Dish ‘Stay Gold’ [Deconstruction]

What can I say? An awesome tune, with pianos, warmth, and Balearica. Love it!
