Boris Brejcha [Harthouse]
17 December, 2007 | 3.27PM- Section: Music Reviews
If a music reviewer in the digital age has one purpose, it’s surely to filter out the abundance of rubbish for his or her readers’ information.
Nowhere is that more true on this track by Harthouse newcomer Boris Brejcha, whose album ‘Die Maschinen sind Gestrandet’ contains numerous pearls of wonky, spiky electro-fied tech-house goodness.
From the sample that Beatport – and indeed any download store – uses, this sounds like a lush, chiseled melancholic groover, with a pristine, chiming lead sitting sweetly above a well-crafted, nicely swung house template.
And for the first half of the track, that’s exactly what it is – and it sounds ace.
However, things take an inexplicable turn for the worse in the second half of the track, with Brejcha throwing down a trashy, OTT electroclash bassline that shatters the refined, emotive charms he’s constructed so effectively beforehand.
Maybe he got bored in the studio, or maybe someone somewhere asked for something a bit more “electro house”, but whatever, it actually ruins an otherwise great track.
Get it as a WAV and do your own re-edit, scrapping the nasty bit at the end – it’s genuinely worth it, if only for that sublime first section.
After all, that’s what record-buying in the digital age is surely all about.
