Weekend Weapons…Thomas Schumacher
Weekend Weapons…Thomas Schumacher
10 June, 2010 | 6.14AMBerlin’s Thomas Schumacher
is steamrolling dancefloors with his new single ‘Taxi’. It’s a sweaty slab of bounce that wears a manic grin—courtesy the pitch-shifted laughter samples—and wields one of the dirtiest basslines that house music has heard in a while. It’s a killer adaptation of the sneering, swaggering approach that Schumacher took with his Elektrochemie LK
project—for instance, on the buzzing electro-techno anthem ‘Schall’—to the perkier style of contemporary post-minimal dancefloors.
Schumacher’s Weekend Weapons suggest why he’s a DJ in demand: he’s got a knack for picking tight, kinetic, left-of-center funk. And, having been in the game since 1996, his crates run a little deeper than those of the Johnny-come-latelies. This ‘Taxi’ driver has earned his medallion, no doubt.
Check out his picks after the jump, and if you’re in Barcelona for Sonar weekend, catch Schumacher at Get Physical @ BeCool on Friday, June 18, along with DJ T., Heidi, Tim Green, and Siopis.
Thomas Schumacher, ‘Taxi (Riva Starr Mix)’ [Get Physical Music]
My man Stef aka Riva Starr is without a doubt the current heavyweight champion of House. He takes ‘Taxi’ to his London garage for the audio version of ‘Pimp My Ride’. First, he doubles up the bass, then strips away the synth and messes around with the vocal sample. The peaktime killer tune of every of my sets of the past 2 months. Sick!
Holyboyz, ‘Pop Off’ [It_Tizz]
One of my favourite labels of the moment with another funk-packed tech house bomb. I can’t get enough of this dirty cut-up sample madness!
Hickup, ‘Hickup Theme’ [Dirtybird]
In come young David & Marcel from Germany’s new capital of tech funk (Kiel!) and blow us away with this monster tune. From start to finish, ‘Hickup Theme’ is pure bliss, a track packed with awesome samples, a killer bassline and breakdowns from heaven. The age of ‘Hickup’ has begun.
Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner ‘Feel Me’ [Highgrade]
Another production duo whose combined talents almost guarantee standout tracks of the highest caliber. I could have picked any number of their tracks but since this is the perfect one to mix with ‘Hickup Theme’, it’s my choice. So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try…
Bodo Elsel, ‘Discount Baby (H.A.L. 9000 Mix)’ [Playhouse]
What a gem from the mysterious and legendary Mr. Elsel. A timeless masterpiece of 4/4 electronic freakiness that never fails to create those “special moments” in my sets. Watch out for his soon to be released comeback EP on Turbo!!!
Thomas Schumacher, ‘Taxi’ [Get Physical Music]
My audible middle finger to the “dull-as-ditchwater-post-minimal-token-ethnic-vocal-sample-loop-boredom”. (Thanks Ewan Pearson!)
Elektrochemie LK, ‘Da Phonk (Steve Bug Mix)’ [Confused]
I sat down for lunch with Herr Bug a few weeks ago and during our conversation he told me that he often feels bemused that people see him as a sort of trendsetter. Well Steve, listen to the remix that you did for me back in 1995 and you have a plausible explanation. Pitch -14% please.
