Weekend Weapons…Simon Baker

Weekend Weapons…Simon Baker

Leeds’ Simon Baker [a] weighs in with a short but sweet set of Weekend Weapons that suggest exactly where his head’s at this summer: deep, funk- and disco-infused house that’s begging to be heard in the open air.

Baker not long ago released his latest single for 2020 Vision [a], ‘The Trick’, featuring a Glimpse [a] remix and a more stripped-down version by Baker himself; it comes on the heels of other recent tracks and remixes for Crosstown Rebels [l], Air London, VIVa MUSiC and Murmur.

6th Borough Project, ‘Planets (The Revenge Lost Groove)’ [Instruments of Rapture]

I f*&king love Graeme Clark’s work as the Revenge. All of it! I can listen to his DJ mixes all day long. In fact, I listened to his stuff on my iPod while training for a half marathon recently, and throughout the actual race itself. Kept me going. The funk, the moodiness, the disco tip, the house vibe, the deepness. It all rolls into one groove that I just love. This track is more uptempo than a lot of his other edits and remixes, but it suits my club DJ sets more as I can drop this at peaktime in between something techy, to change the vibe and get some rears wiggling in a different way!

Matthias Meyer, ‘Infinity’ [Liebe Detail]

Been around for a while now, but I never get sick of this. It’s infectious. It’s one of those tracks that sucks you in when you hear the whole thing played out. I didn’t realise its capabilities when I tested it at home. It’s a through and through club tackle. Deep as hell, mainly about the pads for me. Taken from an old favorite hip-hop record of mine back in the day, it builds and builds, then just holds you up there, then takes you to the next level! I guess you could call it a re-edit, but either way, Matthias did a great job here.

Simon Baker, ‘The Trick’ [2020 Vision]

Wasn’t sure if it was right to put in one of my own tracks or not on this, but this one has been doing the biz for me, so thought why the f*ck not! This started as a percussive house thing. I got some new drum samples at the time, so I started fiddling around with different patterns; the main groove came out of that session. Then as an afterthought (and off the back of taking piano lessons) I thought I would try build onto that with some Rhodes piano and organ melodies. It was one of those tracks that just took a life of its own, growing and growing each day. It probably took me the longest to make out of any tune I have ever done, but I am happy with the results. I play the Glimpse remix a lot also, he added a more stripped-down feel to the original.
