Weekend Weapons…Shinedoe
18 June, 2009 | 5.15AMBoxes. Mankind loves them. Territorial borders, city blocks, ring roads, skyscrapers, shopping malls, libraries, houses, sidewalks, restaurant patios, books, paragraphs, sentences, and these very words. Boxed.
Yet despite our obsession for organisation, categories, structure, and classification, we don’t like to be caged. No one likes to be pigeonholed, especially artists.
Dutch producer and DJ Shinedoe
hates boxes so much that she named her new album ‘No Boundaries’ (listen to a preview in the player below). “When I DJ, the music can move in any direction. I don’t limit myself to one or two music styles, it’s simply about the rhythms that make my heart skip a beat,” she says. “Music comes straight from my heart.”
Shinedoe has always followed her soul. As a result, ‘No Boundaries’ floats freely into dub, funk, jazz, techno and house. She explains, “This is a totally different record to ‘Sound Travelling’ [Shinedoe’s debut LP]. To me this is a signal that I’ve grown as an artist, it’s become a lot harder to label me in one particular music style.”
The dancefloor is one place Shinedoe won’t mind being tied to. Her reputation for providing intense underground journeys into house and techno proceeds her, and her deep understanding of dancefloor dynamics is apparent in all of her club-focused productions.
It’s about time we recognised Shinedoe’s skills as a DJ, so we dedicated this week’s Weekend Weapons to her. Here are Shinedoe’s current top three tracks, taken straight from her very own box.
Julien Chaptal ‘Mamdaye’ [Remote Area]

I love this release from Julien Chaptal, who is a French producer living in Amsterdam. It’s an old school dancefloor sound, but has been transformed into a new school house sound.
The crowd reaction for ‘Mamdaye’ is very good. On the same release I also play ‘Dancer’ and ‘Nuts’ in all my sets too.
Mike Shannon ‘Darkstar 3000’ [Wagon Repair]

For me this track is one of the most interesting productions from the last few months.
It has drum and bass influences that have been combined with a techno sound that’s in your face. When the bass drop it hits you very hard - there is no place to hide from it.
It has great production and when I played it last week at Hotel Shanghai in Essen, the crowd really appreciated it. Well done Mike!
Mark Broom ‘Raincheck’ [Saved Records]

This has a great combination of minimal and Detroit techno sounds. I love it and the crowd goes nuts if you drop it at the right moment.
It sounds very fresh, you have to be a underground sound lover to understand this track.
