Weekend Weapons…Shapeshifters
Weekend Weapons…Shapeshifters
13 May, 2010 | 6.55AMWhat do the Shapeshifters have in common with the Beatles—and also Siouxsie and the Banshees? They’ve gone all helter-skelter.
The London duo’s tune is a lot sweeter, of course, with a sense of bounce recalling classic Booka Shade
, and coolly compelling vocals courtesy Steve Edwards. You can expect to hear it when the boys take over the decks at Defected @ Pacha Ibiza this summer, along with these other sunny house cuts. Keep your ears open for the Shapeshifters’ Nocturnal Groove Radio Show, set to launch later this year; in the meantime, you can hear a number of their Weekend Weapons in the mix on their brand-new compilation, ‘Nocturnal Grooves Volume 2’, along with cuts from Danism, Danny Howells, and even a Shapeshifters edit of Candi Staton.
The Shapeshifters, ‘Helter Skelter’ [Defected]
Yes, we are going to shamelessly plug our own record! If the initial reactions are anything to go by, it could prove to be one of our biggest yet. It’s been tearing it up wherever we have road tested it, and with the brilliant Steve Edwards on vocal duties and a fresh new sound, we’re totally diggin’ this right now!!
Jean Jacques Smoothie, ‘2 People (The Shapeshifters Remix)’ [Strictly]
The original is one of our favourite records, so when we heard that it was due for another release we were straight on the phone to Defected, blagging parts! It’s deep and punchy and those chords and vocal still makes me reach for the sky.
Tapesh, ‘Chicago Groove’ [CR2]
Wicked little groover, this one from a producer we had not really come across ‘til recently. But this track really stands out and always sets the party up nicely.
Dave Floyd & Pookie, ‘London’ [Nocturnal Groove]
Two guys on the brink of a monster, we think: Dave and Pookie, our Serb connection, continue to push forward the respect for new Eastern European talent breaking through. This track is a cheeky vocal edit on top of an absolute beast of a groove. Watch out for this one being played in every London venue and beyond.
Doman & Gooding, ‘Pacific State’ (Original + Afterlife Remix) [Nocturnal Groove]
Brilliant and respectful rework by the boys, done with class. We have finished our set with this a few times now, and we’re pretty sure we will finish a few more with it over the summer!
Pitto, ‘Feelin’ (Joris Voorn Remix)’ [Rejected]
The man everyone is talking about at the moment, brilliant producer, rubbish at answering emails though! ;) Been hammering this remix, totally on the groove we are feeling right now.
Pigi & Pirpa, ‘Sweet Devil’ [Noir Music]
Another groove-based track that is just sublime. We have pretty much played this every set since February, not much more to say on this other than, if you missed it, you missed out. Proper house music!
Max Sedgley ‘Something Special (Spirit Catcher Remix)’ [Jalapeno]
Spirit Catcher’s mix of this record is so well put together and sonically brilliant. The groove leaves you hanging for ages and the when the vocal drops it just feels great. Definitely an early or very late spin for us, but brilliant all the same.
