Weekend Weapons…Roman Fluegel

Roman Fluegel [a], man of many alter egos — Eight Miles High, Soylent Green, Roman IV, plus of course his duo Alter Ego [a] and their various alternate iterations (Acid Jesus, Holy Garage, Sensorama, Supreme Truth…) — has been uncharacteristically quiet over the past year or two. But he recently broke radio silence to release ‘Live at Robert Johnson’, the fifth in a series of mixes for the famed Offenbach club.

It’s a fantastic mix — classic, stripped-back, groovy as all get-out. Its climax is ‘Brian Le Bon’, a new Fluegel production that more than makes up for the producer’s less-than-prodigious output of late.

It’s a gorgeous daybreak burbler that reminds me a little of Ricardo Villalobos’ ‘Dexter’, for the way it winds its way around a long, unspooling melody; it’s also got one hell of an audacious sample in it, but it’s rendered with rare restraint and class.

Roman Fluegel, ‘Brian Le Bon’ [Live at Robert Johnson]

Fortunately, there’s more where that came from: Fluegel is preparing several records for imminent release. I’ve heard the material, and I’m happy to say that it more than lives up to expectations, returning to the swooning deep house and powdery funk of Roman IV and Soylent Green’s best moments. And while you’re waiting for that to come out, his recent remixes for the Big Crunch Theory (on Versatile), Audision (&nd), and Motorcitysoul (Simple) are fine examples of his slow-burning style.

Read on for Herr Fluegel’s own selection of Weekend Weapons. From the deep to the deviant, this music gives you wings.

Kreidler, ‘Impressions D’Afrique (Unit 4’s Oro Borum Bonga Baum Chant Mix)’ [Italic]

This Italo disco mix sets the dancefloor on fire during sunrise at my beloved home base, Robert Johnson.

Matt John, ‘The Other Side’ [Beatstreet]

This guy’s music is always special. He doesn’t disappoint with his latest release on Beatstreet. I’ve never been a fan of the Doors, but Matt is clever enough to deconstruct one of the most overrated bands in the world by turning their samples into something good.

The Mole, ‘Nervous Disid’ [New Kanada]

Simple, effective and done with style. This 12” combines slow loop disco with a tribute to Bobby Konders.

Floating Points, ‘Shark Chase’ [Eglo]

Very hard to find the right words for these sounds. House music, but… different!

Simian Mobile Disco, ‘Aspic’ [Delicacies]

I’m happy to see people still working on further definitions of techno. This one is undoubtedly a weekend weapon that will make true ravers go ballistic.

Populette, ‘Daddy’ [Throne of Blood]

A very cheeky tune with a good sense of humour. The bassline doesn’t really fit with the rest of the track, but that’s what makes it even better – music for summer rooftop parties!
