Weekend Weapons…Riva Starr

Weekend Weapons…Riva Starr

This summer, it looks like Riva Starr [a] is going to need to find a new beverage. His debut album, ‘If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade’, has created so much buzz around the Neapolitan producer that, it’s safe to say, not many lemons are coming his way these days. Can you wring something thirst-quenching out of hit records?

Then again, with a batch of records like those he’s chosen for his Weekend Weapons, Riva Starr’s sets are guaranteed to flow like manna from heaven. With his new label Snatch! picking up steam, he was kind enough to share some mixology tips with thirsty listeners.

If you’re in London this Friday, June 4, catch Riva Starr’s Snatch! showcase—also featuring David Keno and Pirupa—at T Bar.

Thomas Schumacher, ‘Taxi’ (Dub Mix and Riva Starr Remix) [Get Physical]

Been playing both versions of this new little fresh number from legend Schumacher, coming out over the next days on Get Physical. The original is a bass-laden funk tool while my version is more for the big festival season. Live drums and deep bass…

David Keno, ‘Upside Down’ [Snatch!]

I’m very proud that the first release on my Snatch! label is from David Keno. He’s one of the most consistent producers around. He always delivers. This one in particular has a great idea and I have seen DJs from all across the board playing it. That’s the concept behind my label: music with no boundaries!

Claude VonStroke, ‘Aundy (DJ Marky and S.P.Y. Remix)’ [Dirtybird]

As I have a past as a drum ‘n’ bass and breakbeat producer/DJ, I can’t help but love this jungle remix for an already massive jungle-flavoured tune from Dirtybird boss VonStroke. I’m playing this at festivals and club gigs all the time. I really like watching people’s surprised faces when I drop it. Expect the unexpected…

Jesse Rose, ‘Non-Stop Dub’ [Made to Play]

First single ever from Jesse on his Made To Play imprint, loop over loop, disco feel, freaky edit… Made for the dark rooms. Love it.

Steve Mac, ‘The Noise Bastard (Santos Remix)’ [Saved]

Big big big. Long buildup and massive groove… Always big in the club, with people jumping over the roof!

Pirupa, ‘Blu’ / ‘Get Funky’ [Cecille]

I know that this is a well established EP and everyone and his mother are playing it, but it’s still an EP that makes the difference when you drop it in the club. The guy seems unstoppable at the moment. And I’ve been lucky enough to sign some new stuff from him for Snatch! Watch out Bomb Alert!

Kerry Chandler, ‘Pong (Ben Klock Remix)’ [Deeply Rooted House]

Wow this is a superb Ben Klock remix. Long build, strings on strings creating an amazing crescendo, stripped out but banging at the same time. I wish I could get more tunes like this. Thanks to Steve Rachmad for the tune recomendation!

Herbert, ‘Moving Like A Train (Smith n Hack Remix)’ [K7]

CLASSIC! It never fails to rock the crowd. Really. Every freaking time it’s party time…

Riva Starr feat. Rettore, ‘Splendido’ / ‘Splendidub’ [Snatch!]

Summer summer action here. I was a big fan of the original recording from 1979, always thought I had to use the sample at some point, so here we go!  Italian discopop action, it has wig and discoballs written all over it. Props from Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, etc… We at Snatch! like to have fun.. Sorry :)

Remerc, ‘Mwab’ [Yellow Tail]

This tune will firmly stay in my bag for months, years, maybe centuries. Simple and effective. Keep an eye on this guy… Methinks he’s very talented.
