Weekend Weapons…Remute

Weekend Weapons…Remute

In the middle of the night, if an idea comes to Denis Karimani, he rolls out of bed and plays with his machines. The Hamburg-based artist lives and breathes techno under the name Remute [a], and since 2002 when he released his first track aged 19, Karimani has made records, run parties and labels, directed mind-bending music videos, and occasionally sleep produced.

“Sometimes I wake up suddenly, and go straight to my console and start writing music, I’m a night owl,” says Karimani, who also DJs at legendary techno clubs like Tresor in Berlin.

Remute’s music-making excursions aren’t always in the solitude of moonlight. “My best tracks were actually created whilst playing live in clubs, because they somehow end up being more raw and more powerful,” he says.

“For instance, the first tune I released on my label was actually invented whilst playing live in Italy, where I was messing around on stage to see the reaction of the people on the dancefloor. So in many ways, my studio is the club. Maybe I should get people to come and dance in my studio when I make tracks? It’s a big bedroom after all.”

We can’t bring you to his bedroom, but we can give you a taster of his DJ set at Tresor’s 18th birthday party this coming weekend, by asking Remute to reveal 10 of his current dancefloor destroyers.

Remute’s 10 big dancefloor destroyers

Remute aka Denis Karimani guides us through 10 of his current biggest dancefloor weapons.

Richie G. ‘Insomniac’ (Remute Remix) [RemuteD]

Richie G. is 15 years old. I repeat, 15 years old! He’s a guy from Canada, and he will have a big impact for sure. I still can’t believe he’s only 15, it’s quite amazing, really.

He has a very advanced sound, and when I got this tune to a mastering guy, he said he didn’t have to do much for the tune at all, describing it as “perfect”.

He’s such a young talent, and this track proves that I should listen to every single demo I get because new talent has to be supported.

It’s really important to give a new platform to guys like Richie G. I’m sure he will have big career.

Hell feat. P. Diddy ‘The DJ’ (Radio Slave Remix) [Gigolo]

This is a special one. Matt Edwards played it to me for the first time at an afterparty in Hamburg, and it’s one of the most interesting remixes of a tune I’ve heard in ages.

There’s this hypnotic groove, and then suddenly something completely unexpected happens: Radio Slave plays the piano. The P. Diddy vocals are quite psychedlic too.

I’m a party promoter here in Hamburg, which is quite a boring city sometimes. Hamburg’s promoters tend to book soft house acts, and don’t really take risks. That’s why I started booking techno acts, and taking more risks.

For our next party on November 6th Richard Bartz is playing live, and next year the parties will go monthly.

Hard Ton ‘Marilyn’ [Dissident] [vinyl]

It’s getting hot in here! Hard Ton are a very promising disco act from Bologne, Italy. This has warm production, and it’s catchy as hell. It features a very interesting voice, quite high pitched.

‘Marilyn’ touched me when I first heard it, and I played it over and over - it’s a good pop song really, good for opening or closing a set. I know the guys personally and they gave me a CD when I went to Bologne.

I’ve been listening to quite a lot of disco stuff recently, Giorgio Moroder and late 70s stuff. I like really catchy stuff and sometimes experiment with disco.

I just bought a tape recorder for recording drums because when you record drums onto tape, it sounds different. It’s a really big tape machine and weighs about 40kg.

But the sound is totally different. My heart is getting warm just talking about it! I’m currently finishing my next album ‘The Orgy’ that is scheduled for spring 2010.

Savas Pascalidis ‘Web of Fear’ [Figure]

Savas Pascalidis shows us what techno should be about with ‘Web of Fear’. It’s heavy but funky, with simple 909 drums and a rotating synth signal.

That’s all you need for good club techno. Everytime I play it, I’m really surprised, but people totally freak out. It’s so simple, and these days I like to play simple tracks, like the Dance Mania stuff.

I like simple dance tracks, even ones which you might consider dumb. I like to mix up Dance Mania stuff with disco as it can sound quite nice.

Yeah, Remute mixes two worlds: it’s the whole universe mixed up!

Remute ‘Lampuca For Everyone’ (AFFKT & Rafa Siles RMX) [Remute]

This is the last single from my recent album, and it’s more of a summer thing, so it’ll bring back summer to Germany!

It’s disco house, with a hook line you can sing along to. Affkt and Rafa Siles are two promising talents from Valencia, and they did simply an amazing remix - a fat house tool.

Be sure to check the video clip that we did for ‘Lampuca For Everyone’, directed by Christian Schmidt. It’s a black mess with an animated Remute inside!

Freedarich & Stiggsen ‘Candide’ [Areal]

I’ve done two records for Areal. They haven’t been active for more than a year, so this is some comeback. It’s got a clever arrangement and a glamourous breakdown.

With this release, Areal has been reactivated! Maybe I’ll get involved with them again in the future, but for now I’m concentrating on my label.

Martin Eyerer & Benno Blome - Hayat [Sender]

‘Hayat’ is a very surprising release for Sender. Sender used to be all about cold techno, and simple tunes with machine signals, but ‘Hayat’ has very housey percussion and soft bass drums, before suddenly a Turkish singer comes in with nice vocals.

That’s something I never would have expected from Sender. Sometimes it’s refreshing to see artists and labels change up their sound. But although this is something really different for Sender, it still sounds like Sender, and that’s important because labels need a sound.

Maurice Avmard ‘Recordar’ (Einmusik Remix) [Einmusika]

Einmusik runs his own label, which is normally a platform for his own tracks, but it has some fresh artists too like Maurice Avmard.

Einmusik is a true sound master, and on a good PA, ‘Recordar’ sounds amazing. Einmusik always has perfect sound and a perfect mixdown, plus great EQ.

I’m more of a sound arrangement freak then a mix down freak. I like it more raw, and tend to concentrate more on the creativity side in the studio.

Abe Duque feat. Blake Baxter ‘Let’s Take It Back’ (Joey Beltram Remix) [Abe Duque Records]

These are remixes of an old track and I especially like the Joey Beltram remix. It’s absolutely massive, a big weapon.

I think this is the modern rave sound as it turns brains off, and gets people dancing. Joey Beltram is the man, and it’s good to see him back on the scene again. His track ‘Energy Flash’ is probably one of the greatest techno tracks ever.

Abe Duque is one of my favourites too, and he always makes a fat sound. Hopefully I’ll meet him at Tresor’s 18th birthday party this weekend. It’s going to be a non stop party for two days, beginning Friday and ending sometime on Sunday.

GusGus ‘Thin Ice’ [Kompakt]

‘Thin Ice’ is my favourite track off GusGus’ new LP ‘24/7’. It is just epic EMO and Daníel Ágúst provides vocals that give everyone the creeps, including me.

He has added something really soulful to GusGus’ electronic sound and it’s great to see him in the band.

What’s more, I’ve just done a remix exchange with GusGus - They remixed ‘Sling It!’ for me, and I am remixing ‘Thin Ice’, so I’m really happy.

My mix is more like Giorgio Moroder disco. I feel like dancing!
