Weekend Weapons…Pezzner
Weekend Weapons…Pezzner
13 August, 2009 | 5.19AMBerlin is abuzz currently with the sounds of Pezzner
, a little-known artist from Seattle whose disco-flavoured deep melodic house crosses boundaries and warms hearts.
With few releases prior to 2009, it would seem that Dave Pezzner came out of nowhere, but his work as one half of the house duo Jacob London stretches all the way back to 1998. His work has also reached millions via television scores for American Idol, The Discovery Channel, Nordstrom, and T-Mobile, which suggests he’s all all-round talented studio whiz.
This year has seen Pezzner’s solo dance music career pick up considerable steam, with standout releases on Ghostly International, Freerange, and Urban Torque. In particular, his track ‘Logan’ and his remix of Home & Garden ‘Domesticated’ are two of the most engrossing deep house rubs of the year.
With so much variety in his discography, and a forthcoming set at Berlin’s brand new Dice club on Friday 14th August, we decided to find out what Pezzner’s current top 5 dancefloor bombs are.
DJ Koze ‘Mrs. Bojangels’ [Circus Company]
For me, DJ Koze
continues to be one of the most inspiring dance producers out there. Each of his works resonates with clever production and abstract sensibility while still holding a danceable groove.
His music is always what I look for and seldom find in electronic music these days, and he is one of my few favorites.
This particular track embodies all of my favorite ‘Kozeisms’ but to anyone who is unfamiliar with his works, I would advise listening through them all.
Just Two Ordinary People ‘Lucky Times’ (Paul Frick Mix) [spontanMusik]
It seems that while fidget house is dying a slow and stinky death, many of us are redirecting our attention back to the days when we got our house music served with organic round kicks, rhodes stabs, hard shuffled tambourines and rich room reverbs.
Michael Fluhr, Tilman Schwarz, and Paul Frick are fresh blood to the scene, and something is telling me that there is much more to come from these guys.
This mix is an excellent, forward thinking take on an age-old style.
Soundhack (Soundstream) ‘Double Hammer’ [Soundhack]
This is my favorite Soundhack song, but just about anything produced by Soundhack, or Soundstream’s Frank Timm seems to work just right if placed strategically in the mix.
His simple and funky style reminds me that ‘bigger’ is not always necessarily ‘better’ in dance music.
The Discowboys ‘To The Mountain Top’ (Two Armadillos mix) [Dessous]
Giles Smith of Secretsundaze fame and Martin Dawson (the legendary King Roc), have been gaining momentum as Two Armadillos
turning out some of the most dancefloor friendly deep and tech house tracks.
Their productions are always meticulous, warm and simple but most of all, they keep people moving. ‘Jazz Falutin’, their most recent contribution to the Tsuba outfit, is definitely worth checking out, but my favorite so far is still their funky remix of Discowboys’ ‘To The Mountain Top’.
Siriusmo ‘Gummiband’ [Grandpetrol]
Last May, Siriusmo
returned to Grandpetrol after a long strand of releases and remixes for bigwigs like Gomma, Bpitch Control, and Boysnoise.
There’s something to be said about an artist who can execute just about every electronic subgenre with sinister grace and immaculate detail while still maintaining an original voice.
Every one of his songs are worth listening to, but his works for Grandpetrol continue to be my favorite. ‘Gummiband’ is disco genius.
