Weekend Weapons…Kenneth James Gibson
Weekend Weapons…Kenneth James Gibson
17 September, 2009 | 4.22AMLos Angeles’ Kenneth James Gibson helps fly the flag for American minimal techno via his record label Adjunct Audio, and through his dancefloor experiments under the alias [a]pendics.shuffle.
In the 90s he founded noise pop band Furry Things, and over the years his contributions to electronic music have come from a multitude of pseudonyms that includes Eight Frozen Modules, The Premature Wig, KJ Gibbs, Reverse Commuter, Bal Cath and dubLoner.
Most recently, he joined the Culprit stable of artists that includes Hot Natured’s Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, and his new track ‘Animals Tonight’ has just been released through the Droog-related imprint.
With the track getting some big club plays, we asked Kenneth James Gibson to reveal six of his current favourite Weekend Weapons.
Paulice ‘Meneo’ (Wild Edit) [Adjunct Audio]
Paulice’s ‘Meneo’ (Wild Edit) is a nasty piece of South American funk. It’s filled with crazy sounds from the deep jungle that make me want to swing naked from tree to tree in the rain forest and make weird and wild animal noises.
There are lots of strange vocal samples, bits of horns and whistles that fly right off the track and into your head, and enough South American styled percussion to make me wanna play it all night!
Adultnapper ‘Sissy Fuss’ [Clink]
Francis aka Adultnapper can do no wrong these days in my opinion. ‘Sissy Fuss’ is...um....him doing no wrong! Nice dubby synth stabs, comb filtered percussion and a serious swing to rock any smokey head or party at 5am in the morning.
There are voices in this track that make me wonder if I need to visit a psychiatric ward or if it’s just Francis playing a trick on me. Who knows? Sick.
Kenneth James Gibson ‘Animals Tonight’ (Matt Tolfrey & Inxec Remix)
At first I thought this mix was too straight forward for me...then after a couple of listens I realized it was a dancefloor bomb. This straight ahead house approach will work great as a DJ tool or prime time groover.
Funky disco-y bassline with a nice explosion at 5:50...this is for the real house heads!
Phuture ‘We Are Phuture’ [Trax Records]
I’m always going back to the acid. I just can’t get enough and Phuture did it right. ‘We Are Phuture’ is one of my favorites from then and will always get play from me.
Dirty acid for your brain and feet. Don’t need to say much about this one because everybody knows it...and if they don’t...they should!
Camea ‘Dub Me Tender’ [Clink]
Camea’s ‘Dub Me Tender’ is a wicked one! I love the dub aspect of it, as that’s a big part of everything I do in all formats. I love the one-note Prince Fari style horn stabs and the vocal sample works perfect. I really dig the stark and stripped down vibe here. Definitely one of my favorites from Camea.
Fluxion ‘Breath Mode’
Been digging Fluxion’s stuff since the Chain Reaction days. ‘Breath Mode’ is a deep, dubby, and dark late night jam. This track and album on Resopal does me right.
It sits in the perfect place between the moon going down and sun not yet rising.
