Weekend Weapons…Josh Wink

Celebrating 15 years of his Ovum Recordings [l] label, Josh Wink [a] takes a well-deserved victory lap this summer. Catch Wink and friends (D’Julz, Steve Bug [a], DJ Sneak [a], Nic Fanciulli [a], Loco Dice [a], Derrick Carter [a], and others) as they hit Paris’ Rex Club, Leeds’ Mint Club, Berlin’s Berghain, Eindhoven’s Recreation Lake Aqua Best festival, Zurich’s Street Parade, and more.

Wink gives us a taste of what to expect from his sets with a Weekend Weapons selection that runs from classics to CDR-only promos that the rest of us can only salivate over.

Read on for the list, with audio, and as a bonus, check out Ovum label manager Matt Brookman’s top 15 releases from the past 15 years, published over at Urb.

Skwerl, ‘Messier 31’ [Gigolo]

This one has grown on me. A track that takes the listener on a journey, and this is something I miss a lot in records lately. A deep and sexy ever-growing electronic tech house track that keeps building and building with splashes of jazz along the journey. Something that has been getting people to come up and ask me what it is. A special B-side gem.

Radio Slave, The Realness [Rekids]

This has been one of my most secret gems. I treasure this release, and I’m so fortunate that Matt gave it to me several weeks ago. A throwback to ‘90s NYC track house, which just grooves and builds with a crazy acapella over the top, talking about “Banji girls”. A total frenzy! That’s all I have to say about this one. Simplicity at its best! Matt is just insane and on point with his releases.

Shlomi Aber, various tracks from ‘Chicago Days, Detroit Nights LP [Ovum]

We’re happy to have been releasing great tracks from Shlomi over the years, and we’re thrilled to be releasing his first full length. I can’t chose one track as to me they’re all on point. A great continuation from his releases on Ovum, mixing up his Chicago and Detroit influences while keeping them true to his production of house and techno, retro and modern.

DJ Koze, ‘Rue Burnout’ [Pampa Records]

I love records that you can just get completely immersed and lost in. Where you hit start, you don’t know where you’re going and nothing else matters. A simple hypnotic raw groove; at times it’s painful that it doesn’t change. But just then a vocal “Ooooh” comes in and slaps you across the face. Builds and builds and if you are fortunate to have the right crowd you can play the whole track and what takes place is wonderful. Koze does his own thing… again.

Tigerskin, ‘Matters Of The Heart feat. Zoë Xenia’ [Dessous Records]

Electronic house with a pleasant dash of bleeps and tweaks, soulful vocals, deep melodies, and pumping percussion. This one surely breaks up my sets and stands out for good reasons. An amazing groove that just pushes on and on. Dessous and Tigerskin are back on track.

Steve Lawler, ‘Femme Fatale (Livio & Roby Da Funk Mix)’ [Ovum]

The original release on Ovum was a welcome turn in our catalog and Steve’s diverse production. This mix was completed by Romanians Livio & Roby [a]; it saw the light of day when they gave it to me at a gig in Bucharest. Wow. It has been a secret gem of mine and is just the right combination of their signature hypnotic, percussive tech funk and Steve’s original synth-laden melodies. We talked with Steve and Livio & Roby and we all decided that it must come out. People have been pestering me for it for over a year now!

Harrison Crump, ‘Deep Down Inside (Michel Cleis Rmx)’ [Cocoon]

Man, I have this original on DJ Duke‘s Sex Mania label from the ‘90s. But the fact that Cocoon has dug it up and given it the royal remix treatment is amazing. Remixes by Reboot and Michel are both off the hook. Yet, for me, Michel has done it again. He has been on point with his signature Latin percussion lately. But now add tripped-out, hypnotic, funk-tinged grooves, jazzy soulful Rhodes, a throbbing bassline, Harrison’s sexed FX-ed vocals… Well, you have it all! Grooves like a beast—a real monster! Happy to have rocked this since early May!
