Weekend Weapons…Jonas Kopp

Weekend Weapons…Jonas Kopp

They say that it takes two to tango, and for Buenos Aires’ Jonas Kopp [a], that means the indivisible duo of house and techno. Kopp’s own productions tend toward the dark and steely sound of classic warehouse techno—just check the Berghain-sized ‘Z Reticulus’, for the Ilian Tape [l] label—while his DJ sets open up to include sweeter, swingier sounds, as evidenced by his Weekend Weapons picks from Mathew Jonson [a] and the Smallville label.

The 29-year-old producer hit the ground running in 2006, releasing a steady stream of tracks and EPs for the local MindTrip Music [l] label before getting snapped up by Spectral Sound [l]. These days you’ll find him everywhere from International Freakshow [l] to CMYK Musik [l] to Traum [l] and Trapez [l]; this week Curle Recordings [l] released his ‘Ruda’ EP, his second record for the Belgian label, featuring four tracks of cavernously deep dub techno.

Check his Weekend Weapons picks, with audio and commentary, plus an artist sampler and his ‘New vs. Old’ top 10 chart after the jump.

Matthew Jonson, ‘Girls Got Rhythm’ [Wagon Repair]

Modern melodies that give freshness to my DJ sets. I love to play it in order to obtain a good climax on the dancefloor. I play it in every one of my sets, usually at the beginning or in the middle. No doubt, this is one of my top five tracks of the moment.

Alexander Ross, ‘Drift’ [Deeply Rooted House]

I check out all the releases from this label, but this track surpassed my expectations. Solid and deep, with pads that take the crowd on an undeniable trip. I like to play those tracks that transmit or leave a message, and this track definitely leaves a mark.

Function and Jerome Sydenham, ‘White Light’ [Ibadan Records]

This is the techno style that I always hope to hear when I am looking for music to buy. A perfect fusion of dark, solid, and fun sounds, apt to play in any dance floor. I like to play it as much in small rooms as big rooms; the crowd reactions are very good when the synths start.

DJ Hyperactive, ‘Wide Open’ [Missile Records]

A classic track that I have been playing since I was a very young DJ, and it’s still effective… An excellent track to freak out the crowd. It never fails and it was a very strong influence for me.

Kink, ‘E79’ [Ovum Recordings]

I am always looking for new and excellent producers, and no doubt Kink is one of them. It obtains an incredible atmosphere when you play out, a good, sweet, and melancholic Detroit house. Everybody wants to know who made the track when I play it. A really good job.

Basic Soul Unit, ‘Hope.Unity.Vision’ [New Kanada]

I love the raw and old-school sounds from this guy. This track reminds me of the older Spectral Sound tunes. A perfect fusion between Chicago and Detroit stuff, with dirty analog flavours. Ideal to play in basements or small clubs with good sound systems.

Jonas Kopp, ‘Tirados’ [Curle Recordings]

Out of all my tracks, this is my favorite—the most emotive track, and the one that never makes me bored. It’s the first time that I sang on a track of mine. This is the typical track that’s produced fast in the studio, with very clear and direct ideas. I did it in an afternoon.

Rau & Bon, ‘Brothers And Sisters’ [Smallville Records]

Smallville is in my top five labels, I am always looking for their releases and I admire each one of their artists. An ideal track for warming up the floor or to play at friends’ homes with amazing people dancing. It’s very difficult to find good, stripped-down tracks and to be able to play them out.

Jeroen Search & Dimi Angelis, ‘Metheor’ [Outland Records]

I am a big fan and friend of these Dutch producers. They have a clear vision of techno, and this track shows it clearly. A futurist and spacey track, this is the real techno for me, and I love to play it everywhere. I like to play it in every set; the crowd wants to listen to this type of track when I play out.
