Weekend Weapons…Crookers
25 March, 2010 | 3.57AMCrookers kinda rule. They may reside in the upper regions of the electro stratosphere, but these Italian dudes (known to friends and fans alike as Phra and Bot) are surprisingly grounded and humble.
That’s certainly the sense you get from reading their stories about the making of ‘Tons of Friends’, their debut album, which features contributions from an enviable list of top-drawer talents like Soulwax
, Roisin Murphy, Kelis, Spank Rock and Kardinal Offishall.
All those anecdotes are part of an ongoing series they’re publishing on their newly revamped website, Crookers.net, which also features streaming audio of the duo’s entire back catalog, plus a killer series of free, downloadable DJ mixes from the likes of Magik Johnson
, Hudson Mohawke
, and Harvard Bass. Plus Twitter feed, videos, photos, and more. (Cute pictures of monkeys? Check. A fetching photo of Yelle? Check-mate.)
They’ve just hit the ground in Miami, where they’re playing the Bayfront Live Stage at Ultra Music Festival alongside Orbital
, Bloody Beetroots, Boys Noize
vs. A-Trak, and other select representatives from the Planet Banger. But Phra found the time on his long, trans-Atlantic flight to put together a list of the tracks that are currently driving Crookers and their crowds absolutely bonkers.
KiNK ‘Don’t Stop’
One of the tracks that left me stunned and happy from the very first listen—totally groovy and unstoppable! One of those tracks that could last 35 minutes without ever getting boring.
DJ Sneak ‘Fix My Sink (Basement Jaxx Remix)’
Since the day of its release, this track has never left our bags. It’s gone from vinyl to CD, and it’s still one of the ultimate bangers. What else could we expect from a deadly combination of the producers that have always influenced us?
Switch ‘Get On Downz’
An example of class and style—not much else to say!
Crookers feat. Roisin Murphy ‘Royal T’
One of the tracks from our album that we’re playing around the world in our sets. We’re impressed by the genius and versatility of Roisin’s singing. Maybe it’s not polite to write about our own music, but we’re really happy with the results in this case.
Muhsinah ‘Lose My Fuse feat. Flying Lotus’
The first time I heard this track, I started beating my head against the wall so hard that my girlfriend came running into the studio with bandages and disinfectant. The ultimate last track for clubs attended by honest, well-groomed people.
Radio Slave ‘Orchestrating Maneuvers in the Dark (Patrick Lindsey Remix)’
The solo drums killed me… Dat’s why I bought a drum, and I want to play, to makes amazing solo drum breaks into perfect groovy house records.
Martyn ‘Is this Insanity (Ben Klock Remix)’ + Ben Klock ‘Red Alert’
Amazing! We’re playing the Martyn remix at the beginning of clever sets—then ‘Red Alert’ to destroy everything. Works everywhere.
Buraka Som Sistema ‘Luanda Lisboa (Nic Sarno Remix)’
I still play the first, unmixed version Nic sent me ages ago, but YESSSSS this shit is hotter then the restaurant that Buraka’s Johao showed us when we was in Lisbon… That means they’re all our friends.
Boy 8-Bit ‘The Keep’
Dave’s making monsta amazing simple stuff for me right now! The A,B,C of club in gingerhair...
Crookers ‘Birthday Bash feat. the Very Best, Dargen D’Amico and Marina’
If you want to try something different from us, this is a good example of new stuff we like to produce. Not bangin’ club stuff, but it’s still real useful for people that want to learn African, Brazilian Portuguese or Italian in one song. Bye bye, thankx, ciao, arrivederci e baci!
