Weekend Weapons…Carte Blanche

Weekend Weapons…Carte Blanche

For those of you who didn’t take French in high school, “carte blanche” translates literally as “blank document\”; in English, we use it to mean full discretion, total leeway, a “blank check” allowing someone to do whatever he or she desires.

DJ Medhi and Riton [a] take that sentiment to heart with their new project, Carte Blanche. Inspired by classic Chicago house music, sweaty techno, and even a little bit of freestyle—just check their ‘Do! Do! Do!’ featuring Kid Sister—they put a fresh spin on an old-school sound.

As their debut EP ‘Black Billionaires attests, it’s not the Ed Banger [a] sound you might be used to. It’s swingier, sexier, and not afraid to be in touch with its feminine side—even though, as their runaway train of a hit ‘Gare Du Nord’ makes amply clear, it’s also not afraid to rock the hell out.

The boys take their show on the road this summer, hitting Europe and North America with four decks, a mixer, and a TR 909, promising a musical policy of “No bangers, strictly house music”. Judging from their Weekend Weapons picks below, they clearly aren’t writing checks that their asses can’t cash.

Green Velvet and Kid Sister, ‘Everybody Wants’ [Relief]

Green Velvet’s work might be the sole reason behind this whole Carte Blanche project.

Surkin, ‘Fan Out’ [Institubes]

On his own or with his High Powered Boys crew, Surkin is probably our favourite French dance music producer.

Tori Amos, ‘Professional Widow (Armand Van Helden Remix)’ [Atlantic]

Big inspiration for the two of us, Armand is also of the nicest cats in the game. Respect.

Le Le, ‘Disco Monster (Mercury Remix)’ [Megatron]

Been a fan of both Le Le and Mercury since the beginning.

Matthew Dear, ‘It’s Over Now’ [Spectral Sound]

The classiest of the pack.

Hot City, ‘If That’s How I Feel’ [CDR]

These guys carry the torch right now. We play like three of their tracks at every gig.

Hard Ton, ‘Earth Quake’ [Gigolo]

Gigolo has been simply killing the house music game non-stop since 2006. Wait, since...1996??

PUZIQUe, ‘Don’t Go’ [Boysnoize]

Already two years old, and it still gives me the same goose bumps everytime.

Carte Blanche, ‘Gare Du Nord’ [Ed Banger / Because]

Our firestarter.

Plastikman, ‘Spastik’ [Plus 8]

We just can’t conclude a set without this track. We tried. We can’t.
