Weekend Weapons: Wolfram & Constantin
Weekend Weapons: Wolfram & Constantin
9 March, 2011 | 12.25AMWith his group Hercules & Love Affair, Andrew Butler gave nu-disco an affectionate goosing; now, with his label Mr International, he’s giving old-school acid house a good-natured kick in the pants. The label’s latest release comes from Wolfram & Constantin, a pair of Viennese producers with credits for Creme Organization
, Gomma
, Pomelo, TRUST, and Permanent Vacation
, among others. (Wolfram is Wolfram Eckert, aka Diskokaine; Constantin Zeileissen is a member of Microthol, and the two also record as Trans Mania.)
Despite the title, there’s nothing downsized about ”Recession Session,” a powerhouse acid jam evocative of the KLF; Jori Hulkknonen softens its hard edges into a smoother tech-house formation. Wolfram is also responsible for ”Fireworks," a sweet new EP on Permanent Vacation
featuring remixes from man-of-the-moment Axel Boman, Tiedye and Johan Agebjorn.
We asked Wolfram to detail his picks for the moment; read on for his selections.
Wolfram & Constantin, “Recession Session” [Mr. Intl]
Of course I like to play my own sh*t—self promotion, big time. Pardon. The Roland TB-303 synth used in the track reminds people of the KLF’s “What Time Is Love?” I don’t really know the answer to that question, but I like the KLF.
Benoit & Sergio, “Boy Trouble” [DFA]
I got this sent four weeks ago from Jonathin Galkin and Justin Miller of DFA, and I immediately fell in love. It reminds me of Paul Simon, somehow—only the vocals, of course. Also, the Visionquest is great. Big fan!
Son of Sam, “Nature Makes a Mistake” [Running Back]
There is also a great Âme remix of this song from the strong label run by Gerd Janson, who recently sent me an awesome t-shirt of Running Back. Had to wash it already a few times, since it was always sweaty when I played “Son of Sam” in the shirt.
Wolfram, “Fireworks feat. Hercules & Love Affair (Johan Agebjorn Remix)” [Permanent Vacation]
This is a song I made with vocals from Andy and Kim Ann of Hercules & Love Affair. I’m actually not a big fan of tracks with vocals in clubs, but when I play out the Johan Agebjorn mix, it’s sometimes a nice track to start a set or to change the vibe. And the synth sound in the mix is actually the voice of Sally Shapiro’s baby, run through a sampler and pitched crazily.
Rick Poppa Howard, “Do What You Have To Do” [Rush Hour]
Tevo Howard’s dad is singing this masterpiece produced by Tevo. Tevo made two great remixes of unreleased stuff of mine, coming soon on Permanent Vacation. I’m a big fan of his work, and while hearing his father singing, “Do what you have to do,” I really feel like doing what I have to do—which is finishing my “Weekend Weapons” for Beatportal!
Virgo, Resurrection [Rush Hour]
Maybe the best unreleased stuff that ever got released so many years later. I’m still wondering how can so much good music endup in Trax’s office for over 20 years without getting released. Rush Hour made it happen without a rush. Or, at least it seems that Virgo Four had no rush…
