Weekend Weapons: Todd Terry
Weekend Weapons: Todd Terry
31 August, 2010 | 10.38AMFew artists personify house music’s range like Todd Terry
: from his roots as one of New York’s pivotal underground DJs, he’s gone on to become a massive crossover fave.
When he submitted his Weekend Weapons to Beatport, Terry told us how he stays inspired by traveling frequently between the overground and the underground:
“DJing this year has been about playing in two different worlds, but trying to give each world a taste of the other. One world I call the “big room” commercial clubs and festivals, and the other world I call the old school house clubs. I’m playing different records, different types of sets in each, and it’s great to be touring and play a house club in Naples on a Friday night and then a big room in Belgrade on a Saturday night to see what the different crowds are dancing to. I have been at this for a minute and as a DJ you have to know where the crowd wants to go, and it’s my job to take them there. In the big rooms I’m playing Steve Angello mixes, and in the house clubs I can always throw in some of my classics like ‘Samba’, ‘Can U Party’, and ‘Bango’."
Check out his full list of tunes, with audio and Terry’s commentary, after the jump.
Afrojack, ‘Pacha on Acid’ [We Play]
This record reminds me of back in the days when I used to play ‘Acid Crash’.
Todd Terry, ‘Tweaked Out’ [Inhouse]
This is me trying to be Afrojack, a tribute.
Starkillers, ‘Cantina’ [Tiger Records]
This reminds me of a Gypsymen record that I would make.
Crookers, ‘Royal T’ [Southern Fried/Ministry of Sound]
Always easy to hype up the crowd with this record.
Herve & Fatboy Slim, ‘Machines Can Do The Work’ [Skint]
I love the melodic rhythm of this record, it just keeps pumpin’.
Roger Sanchez, ‘2Gether’ [Stealth Records]
I have been throwing this in at the end of the night. It’s a record with great energy.
Chris Carrier, ‘Cabaret Des Belles Lettres’ [Robsoul Recordings]
I “borrowed” this record from Eric F and I’m not giving it back, always works.
Astrid Suryanto, ‘Flexxx (Tee’s InHouse Anthem)’ (Inhouse)
True story: I was trying to get with her, so I thought if I signed the record and made it a hit I might have a chance! Listen to the lyrics and you’ll know what I mean.
Roland Clark, ‘Amore (Tee’s Mix)’ [Inhouse]
You can never lose with a Roland Clark vocal, plus I play this record because I owe Roland money!
