Weekend Weapons: Sydney Blu
Weekend Weapons: Sydney Blu
5 December, 2011 | 11.17AMO Canada! Home to some of the most influential artists in modern electronic music. Bend an ear to the Great North and you’ll hear the minimal sounds of Richie Hawtin, the main-room tech of “the DJs’ DJ,” John Acquaviva, the eclectic indie sounds of Turbo Recordings and its fearless leader Tiga, and, oh yeah… that Deadmau5 cat. Add to that list Sydney Blu, an artist turning heads from Denver to Dubai.
Her first release, 2008’s ”Give It Up For Me,” appeared on Mau5trap, and since then, she’s dropped countless releases on other top tier labels, traveled the world spreading her progno sound, and even started her own imprint, Blu Music. (Blu Music’s latest release, Trent Cantrelle’s ”I Want A Freak,” recently hit #1 in Beatport’s house charts.)
Ms. Blu took the time out of her busy schedule to share a few current favorite tunes—read on to check ‘em out.
Sydney Blu & Damaged Goods, “Devastating” [Blu Music]
This tune is literally massive. Every time I play it, people go completely nuts. With the main sample saying, “The sound you’re about to hear will be devastating!” this is one of those crowd tunes that’ve got guaranteed hands in the air from the first epic build. The tune got early support from Congorock, who’s played it in every single set of his, along with Drop The Lime, LA Riots and A-Trak.
Sydney Blu & Damaged Goods, “Givin It Up” [Blu Music – free download]
The first time Thomas Gold heard it back in March for Miami Music Week, he made me give him the CD right on the spot, he loved it so much. That was a huge compliment for me because I have played this every set for the past year… it’s such a crowd-pleaser. People love the old-school vibe mixed with the new-school sound.
Digitalism, “Circles (Eric Prydz Remix)” [Pryda]
I just love this tune so much. I really think Eric Prydz is a genius. He nailed this remix. It’s very “Pryda,” and that’s what makes it so amazing. It’s proper progressive house and that’s something we barely ever see these days.
John Aquaviva, Dan Diamond, Alex D’elia, Nihil Young “Good Music (Stephano Noferini Remix)” [Definitive Records]
Sending some love to the Definitive crew. Always solid music and they’ve been supporting Blu Music and myself since my label started. This tech-house remix is guaranteed fire and the Dan Diamond vocal of course gives it that extra edge. Good tune.
Sydney Blu & Digital Lab “Jump” [Vicious Records]
For whatever reason it’s taking forever for this record to come out, so I’ll just keep posting the preview to get you as excited as I can. Wrote this a year ago with Digital Lab, and it goes off in every big room I play it in. The vocal is supposed to be inspiring: “Don’t ever look down, only look up, go forward, don’t ever go back… and take the jump.” It’s got that techy/trance vibe that is very appealing to the progressive house crowds today.
Christian Falero & Adrian Villaverde “Big Jerk” [Blu Music]
This is a special one. I closed my set with it at the Rogers Centre opening up for Deadmau5 at the end of his big tour this November. People have been asking me about it non-stop since. It’s a hit. Hear it first here.
Trent Cantrelle “I Want A Freak” [Blu Music]
This is a hit as well. Really happy with the success of this record. It’s still in the Top 10 and appeals to several different audiences, from a big club to a small lounge, which is always good.
