Weekend Weapons…Silicone Soul
Weekend Weapons…Silicone Soul
26 April, 2010 | 7.25AMGlasgow’s Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie aka Silicone Soul
returned today with the second installment of their venerable mix compilation series ‘Darkroom Dubs’.
For underground house fans, the compilation offers a moody trip of dark and dubby house that is uncompromising and expansive in its quest to throw you into the deep end.
With exclusive and unreleased cuts from Klartraum, Sei A, Martinez, Masomenos, Prompt, Nivek Tsoy, Jet Project, and other under-the-radar producers, the mix comp has already been named Mixmag’s ‘Compilation of the Month’, with other dance music media trumpeting a similar response.
The compilation is available in both a mixed and unmixed (30 track bundle) format.
With so many deep gems in Silicone Soul’s darkroom, we asked the duo to name their favourite cuts of the moment. Check out their eight Weekend Weapons after the jump.
Sis - Lola (Connaisseur Recordings)
We’re really big fans of Connaisseur and this is one of their best releases in a while. It has a lovely sweet Rhodes-style groove and a really nice low-end club meatiness, but the arpeggios really take things in a more tripped out direction, musically.
Quite a special track and a big favourite from recent gigs. It’s one to play when you have the vibe locked in on the floor and it’s ‘heads down, eyes closed’ time.
Renato Cohen, Marku Ribas, Technasia - Cosmic Man (Original Mix) (SINO)
We really love party house music, it’s fun to play and even better to dance too. This is a particular favourite and it always gets the trainspotters excited.
It’s got a great funked up vibe, with a wickedly unexpected disco break and grooving scat jazz vocals. A track to get the party swinging!
SINO is a great label too - the new ‘Bension’ release is really cool for a more deep tech tip.
Craig Torrance & Philip Hoshstrate - Surgery Successful (Boris Werner’s Wipwap Remix) (Darkroom Dubs)
This is one from our own label and it’s a perfect track for building upon and taking the vibe in a more purposeful direction.
Boris makes some great tracks and remixes. The groove has a really strong percussive, tribal rhythm, so it’s one that can work at various times, although it tends to work better for us towards the end of the party.
The original is really lovely too, in a more classical deep tech way.
Phillip Aruda - Life of an Alley Cat (Roots & Wings)
I love this track and it has been getting a lot of spins recently. It’s just a really great vibey tech track, effortlessly groovy percussion and a cool big break. Definitely a dancefloor favourite. With this kind of music it’s all about the feeling.
Soundexile - Calling You (Baudelaire Remix) (Noizen)
This one just never leaves the crate and it’s a track that’s wonderful to play. It’s a flowing, deep techno cut that really evolves beautifully, with a repetitive melodic riff. It’s the reverb and FX-tastic break that really does it. Quality stuff and a truly perennial favourite.
Blind Minded - Mr Propre (Trapez Ltd)
I loved this track the minute it arrived and as the Americans are fond of saying, “It’s off the hook”.
Perfect for when the crowd are wanting something really crazy. I hope it’s not just my imagination, but there’s a sample deep in the mix, which sounds to me like a chemist in a Scottish accent discussing chemical formulas - that too really adds to its appeal!
Remote - Conex (Meant Records)
I got this tasty number on promo and we just love big bass driven tracks like these. It has a bit of a rave feel and I suppose it’s very much in the spirit of the classic Kevin Saunderson/ KMS sound.
We always enjoy dropping a few tracks like these in our sets and this one really reminds me of clubs like the Arches in Glasgow.
Cranson - Sued (City Fox Ltd)
The City Fox label is one of our favourite imprints - every release has been cracking, so we could have chosen from quite a few really, especially from Lee Jones and Andri.
This track is just a perfect mood setter and good for warming up the crowd, or as a really late night track - all depends on the situation really, and where you end up.
It has got a lovely deep and dubby vibe and the vocal is damn cool too, especially in the breakdown.
