Weekend Weapons…Shlomi Aber

Tel Aviv’s Shlomi Aber [a] is racking up all kinds of notches in his belt these days.

Last summer found him collaborating with Detroit legend Kenny Larkin [a]. In October, Aber’s label Be As One released its first artist album, Samuel L. Session’s The Man With The Case. And just a couple of weeks back, Aber released ‘Create Balance’ / ‘The Drunk D Programmer’ on the recently revived R&S Records. It’s a powerhouse double A-side of classic techno, tough but nuanced, and versatile enough for main-room extravaganzas and afterhours sessions alike.

But as he told Resident Advisor in an interview last year, he considers himself a DJ first and a producer second. So a peek inside Aber’s CD wallet is always a good chance to find out what’s firing up his public.

He’ll be releasing his next album on Ovum in June; in the meantime, Berliners can check him out this Saturday, February 20 at Len Faki’s Figure night at Berghain.

Read on as Aber shares his favorite dancefloor cuts of the moment, including one seriously secret weapon only on wax.

Shlomi Aber, ‘Create Balance’ [R&S]

When sitting in the studio making music, I’m often closing my eyes and trying to imagine myself in a club environment, and what the track’s influence on the floor will be. “Create Balance” always manages to do some damage when I play it out.

Matthias Meyer, ‘Tout Va Bien [Salvatore Freda Mix]’ [Liebe Detail]

Great remix from Salvatore Freda. I’m playing it everywhere these days.

Dubphone, ‘Vazut’ [Skills Records]

Basically this one’s just a loop, really. But with the Redsound Cycloops and the FX machines I’m tweaking it into a killer full-length track!

Nyra, ‘Feeling’ [CDR]

This is a super cool Chicago house track with very old school drums and programming that kicks up any floor.

Shlomi Aber, ‘Slow Dancer’ [Ovum]

The first single from my upcoming album on Ovum. I’m really excited about this production. It’s very classic Detroit techno and very different from anything I ever did so far. I’m finally feeling like I’m back to my roots after a long run.

Andrea Oliva, ‘Gambler’ [Be As One]

Super cool stabs and very bouncy beats from this great Swiss producer. Lately he manages to surprise me with every new track.

Itamar Sagi, ‘Coffee Beans’ [Be As One]

This has been one of my biggest tracks in the past few weeks. It’s a massive funky techno track with really heavy basses and samba shakes, yet dark enough to be called techno.

Savas Pascalidis, ‘The Final Phase Part Two’ [Sweatshop]

Drums, drums and more drums: just an intense snare loop that manage to blow up the sound system.

Keinton, ‘Strip Poker [Gummihz Reduced Mix]’ [Moscow Records]

This is a very dubby track, but the dark feel and the chunky drums are really working for me. (Available on Beatport March 26.)

Player 8, One [Player 8]

They only made a limited edition of 100 vinyls, and I was lucky to get my hands on one. One of the best techno records I have heard in a long time now: phat groove and top production.

Here’s Aber’s brand-new chart for Beatport, and below that, a 30-track selection of Aber’s work, including remixes for Gel Abril and his ‘Sketches’ collaboration with Kenny Larkin.
