Weekend Weapons: Raized By Wolves

Weekend Weapons: Raized By Wolves

We kick off our week with a Weekend Weapons selection from Raized By Wolves, the new signing to Deadmau5’s mau5trap imprint. We can’t tell you much about them; “Raized By Wolves were found in an enchanted forest not to be surrounded by orchids and oak trees but by synths and drum machines,” they tell us on their Facebook page, but we’re pretty sure they’re speaking metaphorically there. What we do know is that the Manchester/London act’s single ”The Call” is one of the sweetest things ever to appear on mau5rap, thanks in no small part to dulcet vocals from Tom Smith of The Editors.

We asked our wolf cubs to share some of their current favorites; read on for the selections—including a few that may surprise you.

Weekend Weapons: Raized By Wolves

Kryder, “K2” [Musical Freedom]

Checked this out ‘cause of the name alone, title reminds us of an ‘80s sci-fi adventure movie.  Huge sounding track—even granny will dance to this.

Funkagenda & Adam K, “Drift” [Toolroom Records]

Hearing this everywhere and for good reason. Forget air horns; this has an air siren synth. Winning!

SBTRKT, “Pharaohs” [Young Turks]

Very catchy… beautifully restrained. Gets in your head like a pesky melody worm!!!

Nadia Ali, Alex Kenji & Starkillers, “Pressure (Alesso Remix)” [Spinnin Records]

Prefer this Alesso mix to the original. Love the real bass on the drop, plus the buildup before it kicks in works a treat!

Arty, “Around the World” [Anjunabeats]

If you don’t react to this, then you’re dead on the inside! Love the feeling of anticipation followed by a slap in the face…

Felix Da Housecat, “Silver Screen Shower Scene (Thin White Duke Remix)” [New State Music]

From Thin White Duke, aka Stuart Price (Madonna’s music writer/producer of recent years). This tune is a few years old, but it blew our heads off when it came out: the strings intro alone was breathtaking, and his bass guitar breakdown is perfect for crowds to scream when DJing out. This is a Stuart Price remix masterpiece… We’ve always kept our eyes on him since his stylish, ahead of the game, ‘80s pastiche classic project Les Rythmes Digitales.

Omid16B, “Rain” [Bedrock Records]

Superb moody intro pans into stereo-clever production, then a retro, phat, arpy synth. Loving it… builds up nicely.  Top marks from us.

Caribou, “Odessa” [Cooperative / City Slang]

This song is ace, reminds us of Talking Heads meets Phoenix. Interesting voices, tribal bells, etc… Very nice vocal too.
