Weekend Weapons: Phil Fuldner & Ian Pooley
13 December, 2011 | 12.02AMStereo Productions‘ Stereo Cool sublabel closes out the year with ”Zoana," a celebratory anthem from Germany’s Ian Pooley and Phil Fuldner. Organs and pianos give extra oomph to the Latin grooves, and David Herrero and DJ Chus each offer reworks that’ll be no strangers to the peaktime.
We asked Pooley and Fuldner to give us a run-down of their top tunes of the moment—read on for a special double edition of Weekend Weapons.
Ian Pooley
I decided to list some proper classics that never leave my box.
Carl Craig - Chicken Noodle Soup [Planet E]
First i grew up with with my records by Derrick May Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins . Carl Craig was part of the second wave of Artists that came from Detroit . That was around the time when i started to produce and release Music aswell and he had a big influence on the way i’d shape my sound . I always loved that the Releases out of Detroit would sound more dirty compared to everything else . Carl’s Tracks are always in my box !
I:Cube - Disco Cubism (Daft Punk Remix) [Versatile]
There has to be something from Daft Punk here, and because there’s no Roulé on Beatport, I chose this remix. Well, what should I say, a classic to the core!
Iz & Diz - Love Vibe (Jimpster Remix) [Aesoteric Records]
Jimpster totally nailed it with this remix. He took all the right elements from the original and added his famous rolling drive to it. I could listen to this track every day without getting tired of it!
Michi Lange – Brothers & Sisters [Kontor Records]
I was a big fan already when it was first released on Peppermint Jam in 1998, but this version is the killer. I play it nearly in all my sets and I get a lot of people asking me what it is. It’ll never sound old!
Mood II Swing - All Night Long [Strictly Rhythm]
Mood II Swing were my heroes of the mid ‘90s. I especially loved their dubs of remixes. The raw beats of John Ciafone and the warm keys of Lem Springsteen were the perfect match. I always have at least nine or ten tracks or remixes of them in my box/wallet.
Phil Fuldner
Honom - Bedcat [Pole Position Records]
Let me say that I’m a soulman from the heart, so this one really hits my spot. A great slow jam with a smooth Rodgers & Edwards touch. Of course, this is no peaktime tune but rather a solid builder for a discerning crowd to check out how funky they really are.
Fuldner vs. Pooley - Zoana (David Herrero Remix) [Stereo Prod]
Let me introduce to you our new baby on Stereo Prod. It was very hard to decide which mix to chart here. I like Ian’s and David’s both very much. But Mr. Herrero did such a good remix job for Fuldner & Pooley for the second time now, so there’s no doubt to put him in place over here. When you follow the saying “less is more,” this one you will love for sure. Thanks and good job again David Herrero!
Johan Dresser & Juan Kidd - Medusa [Form]
What feels better than an asshaking house tune nowadays? This one is a super groovy but unpretentious piece of club music with a great break for the crowd and a nice little synth line on top. There’s not too much in it, but definitely everything you need to have a good time for the next 8:16 minutes!
Big Black Boot - Vibrate 2011 (Zoltan Kontes & Jerome Robins Mix) [Stereo Prod]
Did you like the original from 2002? Then you will love this rework! Kontes & Robins set the record straight and excogitate a great subtle bassline plus a modern killer groove and still leave in a sneaky glimpse of what we once called “tribal house.”
Soul Purpose - Breakdown For Love [Lo:Rise]
Not the freshest tune but a constant in nearly all of my sets. You really have to be dumb, brave or just supercool to use and revistit a Daft Punk sample, but this courage has to be rewarded! This track is a gift for all of those who loved the original song but couldn’t bed it into their tech or house sets. The main theme only comes up in the breaks; apart from that you’ll have everybody on the floor with a genuine off-base house tune!
Jairo Delli & Adrian Izquierdo - Back One 2011 [Punta del Este Records]
How to make a corny vocal sample socially acceptable? Here’s the answer. Delli & Izquierdo do it the easy way: take a well-known, beaten sample and place it into a cool backing. Nothing more, nothing less. Just works—bang!
DJ Zinc - Nexx [Zinc Music]
Don’t know why, but every time I play or listen to this one, it feels like I’m Inspector Gadget in the movie, running down the streets with a bunch of zombies behind me and still looking smart. In one sentence: this is a big, garage-like peak-time machine. Start it one time—you can’t stop it…
