Weekend Weapons: Petar Dundov

Petar Dundov‘s new EP “Tenth Plateau” (Music Man Records [l]) finds the Croatian DJ and producer rocketing us deep into the cosmos, fueled by throbbing arpeggios and sealed inside a silvery, streamlined craft. Heavily influenced by Klaus Schulze [a] and the “cosmic” synthesizer music of the ‘70s and ‘80s, the record sets a new standard for dancefloor epics; consider it trance music for the techno crowd.

In recognition of the record’s release, we asked Dundov to share a selection of his current favorites with us; read on for his thoughts on tracks from Chymera [a], Deetron [a] & Ripperton [a], and other fellow-intergalactic-travelers.

Dual Shaman, “Ocean Breeze (TJ Kong & Nuno dos Santos Remix)” [Wolfskuil Ltd]

If you are searching for the perfect track for start, I believe this is the one to go for. It opens with nice and positive feelings, and when the first kick lands, people are already jumping.

Chymera, “Façade” [Dirt Crew Recordings]

A universal instrument like the piano with a good melody always works. With a fine, funky bassline following up, it gets the floor moving. Add some strings and off you go…

Booka Shade, “Scaramanga (Dusty Kid Remix)” [Booka Shade / Get Physical]

A simple but effective song. A couple of fine breakdowns with string melodies build tension, and then comes the moving bassline pulsing together with chords, all topped off with an uplifting vocal hook. This one just wont let you leave the floor.

Deetron & Ripperton, “Out Of Frame” [Music Man]

When you want to go for some serious action, drop this bomb. Pure body action with shuffled “in your face” groove, building up until an atmospheric break that lets you take a breath or two—and then back for more wiggling on the floor.

Dimitri Kneppers, “The Kick Off” [Planet E]

Fantastic record, has a kind of Latino influence with brilliant piano rolls that will make the floor go crazy. It just don’t let you go, goes up then down then up again. Has this eternally rising feeling that blasts the floor every time I drop it.

Steffi, “Arms” [Ostgut Ton]

At some point, you will need to relax, and this song is perfect for it. It shifts the tension from body to mind, so you can keep the energy on the floor ‘til the next build-up.

Petar Dundov, “Tenth Plateau” [Music Man]

Somewhere in the second half of the set when I have everybody’s attention, I drop something they don’t expect—the song people will enjoy for a first time that can sum up everything they’ve heard so far.

Stewart Walker, “Shipwrecked” [Curle Recordings]

If you want to go deep, this is the one. Great sounds floating around the room, dragging you into another world. Ideal for early morning slowdowns that make people remember what they were experiencing through the night.
