Weekend Weapons: Oscar G

Weekend Weapons: Oscar G

As much as we love house music for its positive vibes, there’s something to be said for a good ol’ club polemic—think of Abe Duque’s ”What Happened,” Cevin Fisher’s ”The Way We Used To,” or Floppy Sounds’ more recent ”City for Sale,” about the hollowing out of New York’s underground culture.

So Oscar G.’s ”F**k the VIP” can’t help but put a smile on our faces. It’s the Great Recession, for crying out loud: who cares about velvet ropes and pricey bottle service?

Oscar G.’s new Live from NYC mix is all about returning the focus to the dancefloor. Recorded live at Pacha, the set is Oscar’s love letter to New York dance culture, featuring tunes from DMS12, Mario Ochoa, Stefano Noferini, and more. A companion album, Original Beats Sampler, showcases 10 new tracks from Oscar himself, including “F**k the VIP” and “Angel” featuring Stryke [a].

Read on to check out Oscar’s Weekend Weapons selection, including his aforementioned VIP diatribe plus a new Brothers’ Vibe, a track sampling classic Victor Calderone, and more.

Oscar G., “I’m Moving On” [Nervous Records]

This is my favorite cut off the new album. I’ve been working with Tamara for many years now, she was the voice of the Funky Green Dogs [a] project I did with Ralph Falcon [a]. It’s her voice I hear when I’m writing a song. There just aren’t enough songs out there anymore!

Pink Lady Deejay, “Touch My Body (Deep Mix)” [Pino Music]

Ralph Falcon turned me on to this track when he played my Tropicasa party in Miami. The groove is so tight and the vocal sits perfectly on it. This is one of those tracks that starts off a bit mellow but eventually sucks the dance floor in.

Alonzo, “Sagittarian (Alonzo Drum Constellation Remix)” [Filthy Groovin Records]

I’m a sucker for drums/percussion and this track is all about that. The drums build and build and then it goes into this eerie pad/organ thing. I love dropping acapellas over this track and using it for transitions in my sets. It’s a very cool track and great DJ tool.

DJ Laez, “First Season” [Latin Dutch Records]

I LOVE this track! I guarantee this one will always get the floor moving. I played this for almost 15 minutes this past Saturday at Pacha in NYC. It seemed as if the audience just wanted it to keep going and going. Simplicity at its best. This is what I call minimal! (God I hate that word.)

Lazaro Casanova, “Oh Yes, Wow” [petFood]

Laz is Miami’s most promising new producer/DJ and among the best young talents out there. He has developed a very distinct sound, which takes me back to those “better days.” This is an original track on his petFood label. I love when the piano hook comes in, it always gets the floor moving. Great groove.

Semrooy & Pablo Rindt, “A Bailar” [Funktion Recordings]

I really dig the dejembe type sound on this track. I also like how this track keeps surprising you with the different sections it goes into. It never feels dull or repetitive. It seems a lot of “producers” these days find a loop or two and call that a track. It’s always refreshing to hear guys keep it interesting throughout.

Brothers’ Vibe, “Do U Feel The Vibe (Unreleased Drum Version)” [Esperanza]

I cant remember a Brothers’ Vibe track I didn’t like, always seems to hit all the right spots. This one is 13 minutes of percussion heaven. The congas on this thing are insane and you just never want this track to end. A few minutes into it you’ll start to feel like you’re attending an Afro-Cuban Santeria ritual.

Marcao Rezende, “Give It Up (Part 2)” [Dasound]

This track uses the vocal sample from Victor Calderone’s classic “Give it Up” on Eightball Records. I love the old Victor track and this just sounds like an updated version of it. I look at it as an excuse to play a record I love all over again with a fresh take on it.

Oscar G. & DMS12, “F**k The VIP” [Nervous Records]

I recorded this track with my boy DMS12 out in LA after playing at the Electric Daisy Carnival. It was amazing playing at the LA Coliseum to such a huge audience! We were talking about how dumb the whole bottle service thing has become and what a negative impact it’s had on the club scene. It seems the people on the dance floor agree because every time I play this I see a lot of birdies going up.

Rishi Romero, “African Forest” [Spinnin Records]

This is big room madness! This went over huge recently at Mansion in Miami where I just started a new residency. Big tough dirty beats and great builds. This is one of those tracks all the DJs ask me about.
