Weekend Weapons…Misstress Barbara
Weekend Weapons…Misstress Barbara
13 January, 2010 | 9.43AMPut a DJ behind a pair of turntables and a mixer, and they’ll play all night. Stick a DJ on stage with just a microphone and some thoughts, and they’ll fall apart.
For behind the equipment and recorded pieces of music, is a cocoon that protects and comforts their one true self.
Music allows DJs to communicate without speaking. Mixing permits DJs to project their identity without fully opening themselves up to criticism, or ridicule.
But to sing, in front of a room full of clubbers who knew you as just a DJ? That requires a really big set of balls.
And yet, Misstress Barbara
did it last year, with an album and a new live set full of personal songs that couldn’t be further from her days as a hard techno DJ. Of course, some laughed at her.
Featuring the Canadian on vocals herself, alongside established singers like Bjorn and soft-rocker Sam Roberts, the electro-pop and indie techno album ‘I’m No Human’ sounded more Miss Kittin than Misstress Barbara, and probably a wee bit contrived to those who knew her only as a profferer of shades of black.
Misstress Barbara will tell you that it was always there, her inner sing-star, and she would have revealed it sooner was it not for the fact that lines drawn early in a DJ’s career tend to be in concrete, not in sand.
Now the mask is off, she has no doubt lost a couple of fans, and gained a few new ones too. But despite all that, she’s still a DJ at heart as this set of dancefloor-focused Weekend Weapons prove.
Electric Rescue ‘Astropolis’ [Skryptum]
Superb production that’s full of builds and breaks. It has worked well in my sets for months and it never fails to get everyone moving.
Claude VonStroke ‘Vocal Chords’ [Dirtybird]
Brilliant and original. Claude VonStroke is an amazingly talented artist and has been one of my favorite producers for quite some time
Misstress Barbara ‘Four On The Floor’ [Iturnem]
Off my recent artist album, this is my homage to the 4/4 beats that I have loved for so many years. It’s the strongest song in all of my live shows, and I am always happy to see people’s reactions when I play it.
Speedy J ‘Evolution’ (Ken Ishii 2009 Remix) [Minus]
Ken did an amazing remix of this track. It sounds serious and brings in a lot of old school elements, but with a modern twist to the production which I love. Absolutely timeless!
Theodor Zox ‘Fading’ [Ransom Note]
A fun housey track to play with just the right amount of funkiness. The track has an old school sound to it, and exactly my cup of tea when it comes to tech house.
Ransom Note is definitely a label that everyone should be on the look out for.
Smith & Selway ‘Total Departure’ [Drumcode]
Always gets a massive response and still the biggest hit in my box!
Misstress Barbara ‘Dance Me To The End Of Love’ (H.O.S.H. Remix) [Iturnem]
I can’t stop playing his rework of my single. It’s a sexy and psychedelic remix! Everyone from the Diynamic family have been making some really amazing music recently.
Justin Martin & Claude VonStroke ‘Beat That Bird [Dirtybird]
Such a nice and funny remake of the old “beat that bitch with a bat”, which I loved so much. This track is fun for me to play.
