Weekend Weapons: Michel de Hey
Weekend Weapons: Michel de Hey
29 August, 2011 | 4.45AMIt’s been over a year since Michel de Hey last released an EP on his label Hey! Records, but this week he makes up for lost time with “Give Me a Light,” a taut, stripped-back groover that arrives just in time for the end of summer. Co-produced with M.I.R.K.O., “Give Me a Light” gets a deep, portamento-fueled, Detroit-flavored remix from Rodriguez Jr. that ought to do some serious after-hours damage. Check out the EP (plus “Waiting and Waiting,” with remixes from Juan Sanchez and Shakeyabum) here.
We asked Michel to share some of his current favorites; read on for his picks, including cuts from Steve Rachmad, Agoria, and Taras van de Voorde.
Klartraum, “Unique Shadow (Steve Rachmad Extended Instrumental Remix)” [Lucidflow]
One of the most beautiful tracks of the year, with a tearjerker breakdown. Played at the right time, everybody will rise up in the air....
Taras van de Voorde, “The Game” [EC Records]
Biggest piano tune around. Finished off a HEY! beachparty with it last Saturday and it still raised the roof!
Ink & Needle, “Tattoo Two” [Tattoo Recordings]
I have no idea how often I played this one—a lot of the times, as a closing record of the night. Classic tune for me.
Anthony Collins, “Don’t Look Down Now (Roman Flügel Remix)” [Curle Recordings]
Slow but dancefloor-destroying techno. First time I played it was Weekend club Berlin. Thinking about that night (thanks to Monika Kruse) still brings back a smile to my face, so still play it!
Dapayk Solo, “Motolee” [Leena ]
What a tune, great for festivals and clubs. I had dinner with him a few months ago without knowing it was him—too bad, otherwise I would have begged for a remix. Fantastic producer—maybe he’ll read this?
Michel De Hey vs M.I.R.K.O., “Give Me a Light” [Hey! Records]
I finally decided to release this after Derrick May telling me he liked it so much, he played it from a CD I gave to him months ago. Well, what is good enough for him… is good enough for me! And to make it extra special, Rodriguez Jr. made a sublime remix.
Agoria, “Panta Rei” [Infine]
Love the way he uses the melodies and chords in this. At the end of the track, all hands are in the air—Agoria still kicks ass!
Jules-De-Pearl, “Phantom” [My Best Friend]
Liked it when I got it, just started playing it, and it has such a nice melody in it, so keep on playing this!
