Weekend Weapons…Luke Slater

sees the future, and he attempts to paint it through his sonic abstrations that are resolutely pure techno.
Despite coming close to the mainstream (and purist derision) in 2002 with an electronic pop record ‘Alright On Top’, the veteran producer’s 20-year career has been consistent and influential.
His multiple aliases - which includes The 7th Plain, Clementine, L.B. Dub Corp, Offset, and Deputy Dawg - are responsible for some of Britain’s most forward-thinking techno music over the years, and now he’s back doing what he does best: undiluted rhythms and experimental club sounds, under his Planetary Assault Systems
moniker.
PAS’ new album ‘Temporary Suspension’ was widely praised when it was released in June on Berlin’s authoritative techno label Osgut Ton. Slater is now, once again, on the front pages of techno where he belongs.
With Slater headlining Berghain in Berlin, Awakenings festival in Amsterdam, and I Love Techno in Belgium in the coming weeks, we decided to ask the pioneer to share some of his current dancefloor destroyers. He gave us 12 bombs straight from the bleeding edge.
O/V/R/, Regis, James Rushkin ‘Interior’ [Blueprint Records]
This whole EP is a crate imperative for me. It’s a blend of groove and darkness and honesty - you always hope that the floor will reach that kind of mind point. Good clubs do.
These tracks have to be played at the right moment. The EP stinks of quality and I’m just working on a remix for James right now.
A. Mochi ‘Black Out’ [Figure]
Japan, on the electronic scale is right up there, but on the amount of groove injected into the music scale, is doesn’t fare so well. But I came across A. Mochi a while ago and
he has since released two singles on my label, Mote-Evolver.
This release on Figure is top stuff, and I’ve been playing ‘Black Out’ for a while now. Keep an eye on this fella, he’s very cool.
Deuce ‘Guttering’ [Ostgut Ton]
I love it when i hear something I haven’t heard before, and this particular cut on the ‘Deuce EP’ is one of them.
At its basic, it’s an infectious beat but it’s also much, much more. It’s alive, and it touches the soul. I get shivers every time I play it.
Phase ‘Fragmenta’ [Token]
I’ve been playing the three tracks on this release for a good while now. It’s a very nice release and all of the tracks are right up my alley.
Phase seems to be releasing some good music at the moment, so it’ll be interesting to see how he develops over the coming months.
DP-6 ‘Rise & Shine EP’ [Naked Lunch]
There’s no messing about on this release. All three tracks have got just the right amount of groove, and they’re to the point.
Naked Lunch is definitely a favourite label of mine currently.
Jeroen Liebgrets ‘Hunter/Grazer’ (Planetary Assault Systems Remix)
This is a track that I remixed for Jeroen a few months back, with a lot of sub in it. People seem to like it and the sub definitely works on the right system.
Jeroen is part of Radial in Holland and he’s working on a release for Mote-Evolver right now.
Radial really imprint their own sound on techno and it works really well.
