Weekend Weapons: Logistics

Weekend Weapons: Logistics

Bristol is burning, or at least it will be from October until the end of the year, when the Bristol In:Motion series takes over the city’s clubs with a full slate of underground music. Junglists will have field day on Saturday, October 2 when Hospital Records [l] presents Hospitality, featuring a sprawling lineup of label family members and friends, including High Constrast, Marky [a], Danny Byrd [a], Netsky, Fabio [a], Hatcha [a], Logistics [a], D-Bridge [a], Shortstuff, and many more.

In honor of the occasion, we asked Hospital’s liquid funk surgeon Logistics to run down his favorite tunes of the moment. Read on for cuts from New Zealand Shapeshifter [a], Octane and DLR, and Logistics’ big brother Nu:Tone [a], among others.

Shapeshifter, “Lifetime (Logistics Remix)” [Hospital]

I was really pleased to be involved in this remix project for the new signings on Hospital, as I’ve been a fan of their music for a while now. I was given a choice of any of the tracks from their last album and “Lifetime” seemed the obvious choice. I tried to balance the vocal with some grittier beats and bass whilst still keeping that uplifting vibe that the band are known for. This was a big tune on my last tour of Australia and New Zealand and has also been going down well in this hemisphere of late.

Octane and DLR, “The Walrus” [Dispatch]

New duo Octane and DLR have really been catching my ears recently with their rugged rollers, most of which have been released on Ant TC1’s Dispatch Recordings [l] label. For me this is the pick of the bunch with a stupidly large bassline that has been doing damage all over the shop. Watch out for more from these two in the near future!

Cyantific and Logistics, “Brighter Day” [Cyantific]

It took an eternity to finish but we got there in the end. This track was started back in 2008 whilst we were both on tour together, we then drafted in Natalie Williams to lay down some vocals and the result seems to get a great reaction every time I play it out. The flipside, “88mph,” is another track I’ve been dropping in my sets which is on more of a classic Cyantific vibe, with choppy drums and old school references.

Digital feat. Morphy, “Shanti” [Exit]

Digital is back and sounding as big as ever. This track is unlike anything else out there right now, as soon as I heard the melodica I knew I was in for something special. There are very few people who can get the dub influence right in drum and bass but Digital always captures that vibe perfectly. It’s great to hear something with so much space that’s still catchy and has a hook, I’d advise listening to this one on a big sound system!

Nu:Tone, “Hyper Hyper” [Hospital]

Something that hasn’t left my record bag all year, this is one of my favourites from my big brother Nu:Tone. Full of wonky synths and manic beat edits, this sounds as good on a home system as it does on the dancefloor. I’ve also been dropping the flip “Set Me Free” to great effect as well. Look out for his album early next year!

Komatic and Technicolour, “Skyline Boulevard” [Technique]

A lovely slice of soulful drum and bass from relative newcomers Komatic [a] and Technicolour [a], this has a great uplifting vibe to it without ever going too over the top. A sound that has been overlooked as of late with all the minimal drum and bass floating about, it’s great to hear people still making this sound.
