Weekend Weapons: Layo & Bushwacka!
Weekend Weapons: Layo & Bushwacka!
27 October, 2011 | 7.02AMLayo & Bushwacka! are coming off a busy summer, having wrapped a season of Shake It! parties at Amnesia, finished up a new Olmeto EP for December, and a new album due out next year.
We asked Layo give us a snapshot of the duo’s crate at the moment.
“To make clear, this is in no particular order,” he tells us. “There are maybe 20 -30 tracks I’m really into at any moment, but here’s a random selection, all weapons when dropped right...”
SIS, “Immigrant” [Cocolino]
I guess there is so much electronic music and to stand out you need your own sound… SIS has this. I am really into the organic ways his tracks evolve. This is a groove but a way of changing the mood too, could really be played in many ways.
Jun Akimoto, “Santfrancese” [Kina Music]
I love this kind of track, well produced, sparse but very funky with some great samples and changes, could play this all night!
Amirali, “My Way” [Crosstown Rebels]
Impossible not to include a track from this label at the moment, amazing quality output, love the vibe and this is really beautiful, was my first track last Saturday.
K’bonus & Negghead, “Harmonizing” [Compost]
Very easy to miss tracks when buying electronically, I miss the record shop as part of my life. This makes me think of a track I would buy from Phonica, slightly slower but very playable and very funky.
Achterbahn D’Amour “Your Love (Idjut Boys House Version)” [Absurd Recordings]
I like this house revisit that’s going on, I think there are more styles being accepted at the cutting edge, I don’t like when there is a dogma about what’s cool and what’s not when it should really be about what’s good. This is a just a groove with old drum machines but I really like it.
Wehbba, “Raw Vision” [Toolroom]
Realised the list was getting very housey and that wouldn’t be too much about weapons so have to include something that’s totally rocking, really like his stuff.
James Blake “Limit to Your Love” (edit) [Atlas]
I was given this which is a very simple rework of a great, great track. Obviously it is the beauty of the original that carries it, but it’s very tastefully done and creates a lot of magic when played out.
Layo & Bushwacka! “Gunpowder” [Plus 8]
The obligatory promotion track. Had to choose which to go vinyl with and this went digital, but I live in regret. My favourite of the last Plus 8 EP.
