Weekend Weapons…Kiki

Weekend Weapons…Kiki

It’s a Saturday night in Berlin and a sweet smiling Finnish DJ named Joakim Ijäs steps up to the sweaty decks at the Watergate club that overlooks the River Spree.

Before he drops one beat, the heaving dancefloor knows what to expect. His rich and gratifying sophomore album ‘Kaiku’ released last year, cemented everything that he had done before.

Darkly optimistic techno and sweetly evil melodies on Berlin’s Mood Music and Bpitch Control have won Kiki [a] many fans, not least because he’s as consistent as they come.

You can always rely on Kiki to get the dancefloor to move and think, so we asked Finland’s most loved techno export to share eight of his current favourite Weekend Weapons.

Chopstick & Johnjon ‘Clear Eyes’ [Suol]

Chopstick & Johnjon have a new identity. They’ve changed the name of their label from Baalsaal to Suol and what a great way to kick off the new imprint.

All four tracks on this release are great and show a deepness not too often found amongst the huge release piles of loopy house. ‘Clear Eyes’ especially has been getting those hands in the air every time I’ve played it and everyone always asks what it is. You should have seen Panorama Bar last week when I dropped it!

Karacol Soul ‘Makin Day’ [iVAV Recordings]

This is a new sub-label of Viva records. This is my favourite tool at the moment, when I want to take things somewhere more twisted and wow this has been doing the job well!

I always mix it with other tracks or accapellas for minutes and minutes, and it’s just perfect for that. It makes my sets very special.

Toni Lionni ‘My Shadow’ [Figure]

I’m a huge fan of Toni Lionni. He always manages to find that perfect mix between huge sounding tunes and ones that you can play on the deeper, smaller floors.

It’s not an easy mixture to achieve at all! This has been my biggest floor weapon for some months now, but I’ve also made a special edit of it with a vocal on top. Try and guess what it is?

Seth Troxler & Matthew Dear ‘Hurt’ (Martinez Remix) [Spectral]

The unstoppable Seth! The original of this was already cool, but it’s Martinez who really squeezes the sweat and sex out of the track.

The beats sound like you would stick to them on the dancefloor - the kind of slowmotion-stuck-in-a-loop kind of thing, and it just goes on and on and on.

Siopis ‘Really Love Ya’ [Get Physical]

This is my old production partner Silversurfer with a new identity, and a tune that has been my end of the nighter for a while now.

It really spreads the love in the club and there’s always smiling faces when I play it.

It has this vocal that stays in your head all the way back home from a club.

It’s excellent and a huge improvement from him! I’m very excited to see what he pulls out next!

Ian Pooley ‘My Anthem’ [Force Inc]

This is a classic that I’ve been dropping to great effect during every set lately.

It’s a track I used to play a lot at my first residency at the Tresor in Berlin during the mid 90s, and Sascha Funke reminded me of it again a while ago.

It has a wild pitch sound with a standing string and 303! It’s a picture disc with pretty but crazy psychedelic graphics on it, and unfortunately my copy sounds like it has been to a few too many clubs.

Matthias Meyer ‘Tout Va Bien’ (Kink Remix) [Liebe Detail Spezial]

The original of this track was in my top tracks chart of 2008, and Liebe Detail has somehow managed to put together a killer remix package of such a perfect track!

The Kink remix here has been a real riot of a tune in my sets lately and that’s mainly due to a part in the middle where jacking 909 hats kick in.

Anja Schneider ‘Amore’ [Mobilee]

This release is the first record that I have produced for another artist, and I tried to leave my ego outside of the studio. I’ve known Anja for quite a few years and I suppose it was just a question of time when we would work on something.

The release came up quite fast and out of the three tracks we did together, this is the one that has been rocking my sets. It has a vocal hook that really catches people’s attention from the very first minute, and judging by the screams and shouts it could be a hit. Coming soon.
