Weekend Weapons: Justin Robertson aka The Deadstock 33’s

The latest EP from Paris’ Tigersushi label finds Stopmakingme (aka London promoter, DJ and producer Dan Avery) teaming up with The Deadstock 33’s, otherwise known as the British dance-music veteran (and former Hacienda resident) Justin Robertson.

Robertson’s deep grounding in all things boogie and Balearic shines through on the four-track ”Gravity” EP, flush with bright analog arpeggios and rickety drum machines; for fans of International Feel and DFA, these tracks are no-brainers for summer BBQs and sweltering basements alike.

We asked Robertson to run down some of his current faves; read on to check out his robo-disco-acid-wiggler picks.

Gonno, “Acdise” [International Feel]

A swirly trip of a tune, hypnotic and enthralling, a perfect end-of-night beauty. [Out September 12, featuring remixes from Gatto Fritto and Skudge.]

The Deadstock 33s and Stopmakingme, “Oscillate” [Tigersushi]

From our new Tigersushi EP. An arpeggiated vocoder disco techno wiggler that’s been very effective over the summer.

Silver Shower, “Early Fever” [Plus 8]

Still a favourite—an acidic swirler with a top scat vocal from a month or so ago, will be in the box for the summer and beyond.

Abstraxion, “Jus Acid” [Different]

The In Flagranti remix and the original mix are superb, a new vintage sound!

Die Vogel,"Fratzengulasch" [Pampa Records]

Very inventive and enthralling tune, playful and fascinating.

Recloose, “Tecumseh” [Rush Hour]

Mind-bending jacker that manages to be dirty and beautiful at the same time.

Arveene and Misk, “Mi Casa (The Deadstock 33s Remix)” [Animal Language]

Live-sounding techno with a dub punk-funk flavour. [Check out the original here.]

Light Year, “Marcellus (Malente Dub)” [Bang Gang]

Much fun and energy on this quirky number, big in fields.
