Weekend Weapons: Joyce Muniz

Weekend Weapons: Joyce Muniz

Earlier this year, we tipped Joyce Muniz as one of our artists to watch for 2011, and we’ve got to say, we were right on the money. Since her “Bedstories” EP came out in January—featuring remixes from Michal Ho and rising bass star Cosmin TRG—she’s remixed Munk’s “Mis Labios,” Bombs & Kill Frenzy’s “Pain Train,” and Blaze’s timeless ”Lovelee Dae,” among others, and her cuts have been snapped up for numerous DJ mixes and best-of-summer comps.

Now the Brazilian-raised, Vienna-based producer returns with some of her tightest, deepest house yet. Her ”Pulp Fiction” EP (Exploited) spans five tracks of blissed-out bounce that’s versatile enough to go down a treat any time from early evening til sunrise—and the romantics in the house will be thrilled by a cameo from the velvet-voiced Lothario Louie Austen.

To accompany the EP, Muniz and Exploited have also released the ”Future House Dubs” version of the record—currently exclusive to Beatport—featuring two more new cuts and four spacious dubs.

We asked Muniz to share with us a selection of her Weekend Weapons, and she came up with a crackerjack set of truly timeless dance music: “Here are a few of my all-time favorites that influenced my way of DJing in the clubs today,” she tells us. “Tunes that put me in the mood to create the perfect party or to inspire me before I go to the studio.”

Read on to check out the tunes, and get her full October Top 10 on Beatport here.

Tim Wright, “Thirst (Luciano’s Dancehall Mix)” [Mute, 2004]

I used to play this tune on vinyl. Big tune. I think maybe one of the first minimal techno productions with vocals. Great work from Luciano! The remix is still fresh!!

Mafikizolo, “Loot (Afrikan Remix)” [MAW Records, 2001]

One of my first Afro-house records. I had to wait a couple of months to get this record. I love this song - especially the percussion ... dope cheesy house tune!!

Air Frog, “Bon Voyage” [SVEK, 2000]

When I heard this tune for the first time, I couldn’t believe what was going on! Damn! In the beginning of the song there is this great jazz-percussion Brazil/bossa vibe that goes into this dark, bombastic synth bass. I think because of this record, I switched from drum & bass to techno.

Recloose, “Cardiology (Isolee Remix)” [Playhouse, 2004]

This tune is pure dopeness...... big love.

Superdiscount, Remix Album Part 1 [Different, 1997]

The album is amazing! It came out in 1997 and all the tunes still fill the dancefloor and sound great! My favorite tunes are “Prix Choc” and “Super Disco” (the Alex Gopher remix). Those tunes are hard to find nowadays. Check this one here!

Fauna Flash, “Tel Aviv (Peter Kruder’s Bum Rush the Discotheque Remix)” [Compost, 2001]

Not only because I grew up in Vienna, I must say: this Peter Kruder remix is the shit! It was futuristic for 2001, still in 2011....

Aly Us, “Follow Me” [Strictly Rhythm]

This tune brings back childhood memories from Sao Paolo. I was a 10-year-old kid and my neighbor was listening to it while washing his car. I walked over and asked him what it was and got home with the tape.
