Weekend Weapons: Joey Negro
Weekend Weapons: Joey Negro
12 November, 2010 | 4.09AMThe UK’s soul/funk/disco devotee Joey Negro
has been in high gear since the summer, first with the 20 Years of Joey Negro mix, 10 Years of the Sunburst Band and The Soul of Disco Vol. 1, a collection of the artist’s disco edits. In October, he resurfaced as Akabu
with “Another Generation,” a teaser EP for the forthcoming album, featuring two of Joey’s extended mixes and a crazy deep Jimpster mix. (His debut album under the Akabu moniker will be out soon, featuring collabs with Andre Lodemann, Boomclap Bachelors, Foremost Poets, Tony Momrelle, Joel Edwards and Tanya Michelle.) The latest to come from Joey (real name Dave Lee) is Joey Negro Presents Kola Kube: Why, featuring a bounty of versions from Joey and Hot Toddy.
We asked the man to tell us what’s in heavy rotation in his sets; read on for some heavy house picks, including records from Planet E
, Ochoa, Ed Banger (!) and more.
Oliverwho Factory, “Nightlights” [Planet E]
This interestingly combines electronic synths with a quite discoey vocal. Kinda boogie techno, one of my favourites of the year.
Akabu, “Another Generation” [Z Records]
I play this most sets and even though the intro chords initially mellow things out, the momentum really picks up once the sax comes in. It normally ends up being one of the biggest tracks of the night
Ezel, “In My Lifetime (Deetron Club Mix)” [Ochoa]
Love what Deetron has done to this. A real underground house tune with dark mysterious chords and it works surprisingly well on the floor
Joey Negro presents Kola Kube, “Why (Hot Toddy Dub)” [Z Records]
This Carly Simon revamp was done for an outside project that never came to fruition, so I finished it with Dianne Charlamagne (52nd Street/Goldie, “Inner City Life") doing the vocals. Hot Toddy has done an excellent midtempo house mix, which I prefer to my own version.
Dennis Ferrer, “The Red Room” [Objektivity]
Dennis turns out yet another dancefloor track that will get played by everyone across the different styles.
Ajello, “Hot July” [Maxi Discs]
‘80s boogie synths meet early house piano and electronic bass, melded together for a great little dancefloor tune.
Uffie, “ADD SUV (Armand Van Helden Remix)” [Ed Banger]
I know this has been around quite a while now, but I still play this peaktime floor filler a lot. I really like the chorus hook and though it’s quite banging, it’s not moronic. I did my own edit removing the rap.
Full Intention, “Earth Turns Around” [Full Intention]
FI return to their disco cut-up style with a few more electronic noises for this strong club track.
Those Pesky Kids, “As Long As I Got U (Conan Liquid Back in the Day Mix)” [Z Records]
Conan brings the late ‘80s rave classic bang up to date. Always rocks the room.
