Weekend Weapons: Jody Wisternoff

Weekend Weapons: Jody Wisternoff

From breaking through into the DMC World DJ championships as a finalist in 1986 at the tender age of 13, Jody Wisternoff has been a constant fixture in dance music.

In the early ‘90s he toured under the act Sub Love, which at one point was one of the biggest draws on the UK rave circuit. In 1994 he met Bristol-based DJ Nick Warren, and their partnership led to the creation of one of progressive house’s most successful double acts Way Out West [a].

Way Out West are one of the few acts in prog to have been signed to a major label - the duo even performed their hit single ‘The Gift’ on famous British music chart show Top Of The Pops and toured with Faithless, and after 16 years of friendship the pair are poised to release their fourth studio album ‘We Are Machine’.

Beyond Way Out West, both Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren have successful solo careers as DJs and producers.

Jody Wisternoff kindly revealed to Beatportal his big three records of the moment for this week’s Weekend Weapons.

Dusty Kid ‘Nemur’ (Walls of Guitars)

Taken from Dusty Kid’s new album ‘A Raver’s Diary’, Jody is a big fan of the guitar-led ‘Nemur’ (Walls of Guitars).

He says, “What a beautiful voice! As the title suggests, this track is drenched in emotional guitar melodies and heartfelt vocals.

“It’s not a peaktime roof-rasier but it’s the kind of track that if played at the right time will transform the vibe of the room into pure warmth, and might even get you laid.”

Jerome Sydenham ‘Destination Nagano’ (Joris Voorn Remix)

Jody reckons Joris Voorn’s remix of Jerome Sydenham ‘Destination Nagano’ is one of the best mixes around.

“I’ve been playing this for over a month and each time it goes down massively well,” he says.

“In my opinion this is the finest thing Joris has done since his mix of Robert Babicz’ epic ‘Dark flower’, and this track strikes a very similar chord with its super emotional strings and heavenly techy stabs.

“Reminds me a bit of Last Rhythm from years back, which can only be a good thing.”

Spiritchaser ‘Raindown feat. Robina’ (Dub Mix)

The soulful deep house of Spiritchaser [a] is tickling Jody’s fancy, particularly the Dub mix of ‘Raindown’.

He says, “This it the perfect track to set up the vibe of the room nicely. Warm emotional house music which does everything in the right place, very clubby and easy to program.

“Make sure you check the Dub mix as it’s by far the choice cut. It sound very much like Spirit Catcher [a] to me actually, funnily enough.”
