Weekend Weapons: Francesco Diaz
25 January, 2011 | 11.59AMHamburg’s Frank Kuenne—better known as Francesco Diaz
—likes to keep his options open. A producer and DJ for more than 15 years, he’s also worked extensively behind the scenes in the music industry, whether for Stuttgart’s Music Mail distribution or crafting mix compilations for banks and hotels. It was the latter that brought him to the attention of the fashion label Wormland, who tapped Diaz to helm their music division. (Ironically, Kuenne has a degree in fashion himself.)
He recently worked on Timeless, a set of electronic interpretations of the work of Mikis Theodorakis—a Greek icon, former WWII resistance fighter, and esteemed folk composer—to celebrate his 85th birthday. Last year he and Young Rebels
also released the comprehensive Mission Complete, a collaborative artist album featuring contributions from the likes of Deadmau5, Dada Life, and John Dahlback.
Diaz & Young Rebels’ “L.O.V.E.,” released on Wormland Black in November, is about to get a vocal release featuring Shawnee Taylor on Ministry of Sound. Meanwhile, he’s got several new releases out, including Diaz & Young Rebels’ unreleased dub mix of Marc Mysterio’s “Shout It Out” is fresh out on Amerada, plus the 26-track compilation The House of Gods Volume 01, on Wormland Black, along with Diaz and Jeff Rock’s ”Reflect," for the same label.
We asked him to share a few of his top tunes of the moment—read on for his picks.
Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels, “L.O.V.E.” [Wormland Black]
A very cute progressive track which puts a smile on people faces. The vocal version (with no one less than Shawnee Taylor) is already signed to Ministry Of Sound and will be released in March 2011.
Marc Mysterio, “Shout It Out (Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels Remix)” [Amerada]
I really loved the vocal in this song, but it’s the driving bassline that pushed people wherever I’ve played it! We tried to put the focus on the break, which makes it very unique for me. We did the mix some months ago and it’s still a highlight in the clubs!
Daniel Ortega, Mike Moorish & Phaxx, “The OC (Oslo Connection) (David Costa & Jeff Rock Remix)” [Wormland Black]
An absolute peaktime track! Got this one from David and his
remix really kicks ass—the beats are very groovy and the string break is unbelievable!
Tube & Berger, “Free Tribe” [Kittball]
A very groovy tech house track, with a hypnotic vox sample as well as really cool harmonies. I love the mood in this track!
Deadmau5, “Raise Your Weapon” [mau5trap]
It’s one of my favorites from Deadmau5. The vocal and the piano give the track a very hypnotic mood, which has its peak in the dubstep break—which takes the roof off! I love it!
The Temper Trap, “Sweet Dispostion (Axwell & Dirty South Remix)” [Infectious Records]
Still a progressive anthem! One of my favorites for more than one and a half years now and—in my opinion—one of the best remixes these guys ever did!
Mohombi, “Bumpy Ride (Sebastian Ingrosso Remix)”
A very strong remix from Sebastian with an anthemic break. A fantastic vocal in the break and a really peaktime progressive playback.
Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels, “Hamburg”
Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels - Hamburg (Original Mix) by Francesco Diaz
A progressive peaktime track. We just finished it one month ago and it comes out on Beatport on January 31. You can listen to it at my SoundCloud account, to get an impression!
