Weekend Weapons…DJ Icey

Weekend Weapons…DJ Icey

DJ Icey’s cool b-boy flavoured breakbeat made him king of the Florida breaks scene in the mid-90s, which at one point led the US club scene with its alternative dancefloor beats.

Before Britain’s nu skool and funky breaks scene took off, Icey and a group of artists that includes DJ Baby Anne, DJ Sharaz, and DJ Mondo, led America’s breakbeat community by aligning it to its hip hop and electro roots.

Icey has in the past been described as a ‘remix factory’, with well over 100 remixes having been released by the Orlando-based man. To this day, he continues to sell out underground clubs across America with his crunk-influenced broken beats and acid trips.

His dirty club-shaking rhythms have reached all the scene’s biggest labels including Ali B’s Air Recordings, Skool of Thought’s Supercharged Music, and the UK’s pioneering breaks label Distinct’ive, as well as his own imprint Zone Records.

Recently Icey has dropped a number of big breaks cuts including ‘Mayday’ on Air, and a remix of Tony Faline ‘One Time 4 The DJ’. He also dabbled with dubstep-influenced breaks on ‘Ill Communicate’ in July, which was produced alongside Keith Mackenzie.

We asked DJ Icey to share his biggest breakbeat tunes of the moment. Get ready for the drop.

Crookers ‘Embrace The Martian’ (Seiji Booty Mix)

This works a charm. It has a brilliant minimal production - it’s all about the beatz and the cut up vocal, nothing more is needed.

Fever Ray ‘Triangle Walks’ (Tiga’s 1-2-3-4 Remix)

This downtempo tune has garnered a massive response from my Automatic Static Mix Show on Sirius XM. Tiga delivers in a almost Balearic throwback, and it’s a nice way to end your set if you are closing out the evening.

Good stuff, 1-2-3-4!

Dave Spoon ‘Lummox’ (Plump DJs Remix)

This has been all over the Top 10 Breaks chart on Beatport for over a month, and rightly so, as this is pure quality from the Plumps.

Amazing production that sounds even more amazing in a big room, nothing but class.

Tal & D.I.M. ‘Lyposuct’ (DJ Icey Re-Rub)

I did a little re-rub of this frenzied slice of madness with some more loops, and it always works on the floor. Sick stuff!

Sidney Samson ‘Riverside (Peo de Pitte Re-Rub)’

Look out for the Peo de Pitte version, which drops the Renegade Master accapella and some broken beats over the electro bomb for a wicked breaks interpretation of this late summer tune. Nasty for the winter!

Forthcoming

Laidback Luke & Lee Mortimer ‘Blau’ (Krafty Kuts Re-Rub)

This forthcoming tune is set alight by the monsta maker from Brighton, Krafty Kuts. It is just devastating on the floor!

DJ Icey ‘Amtrak’

My new tune features some super fun filtered disco loops interwoven with 303 ccid action. It’s party music that dropped nicely for the first time last week in Washington DC at Muse. A house mix is coming from Cali’s DJ Kue, and it will be released exclusively on Beatport in late December.

Curtis B. and ill DJ Chris B. ‘B Boyz Get Up’

White Folks do some crunk! The duo drop a nasty B-Boy break dancing cut, and Will Bailey comes in strong with his patterned Electro Mix. It has been huge in my box for weeks now and drops on Beatport next week.
