Weekend Weapons: DJ Friction

Weekend Weapons: DJ Friction

DJ Friction is largely regarded as one of the best drum & bass DJs, which is why he was recently asked to mix the latest in Ministry of Sound’s ‘Drum & Bass’ series. AKA Ed Keeley, Friction is not only known for his diamond edge mixes and explosive performances but also for spearheading one the scene’s biggest labels, Shogun Audio [l].

His Weekend Weapons survey forward-thinking, hard-hitting cuts from Shogun, Hospital Records [l], Samurai Music [l], and Critical Music. Read on for audio and his commentary.

Rockwell, ‘Full Circle’ [Shogun Audio]

A track that for me proves that drum & bass can still think outside the box and break boundaries better than any other genre. Starts with a dreamy intro with lots of blips and bleeps before taking you into some next level 2010 jungle bass! If you don’t own this record then buy it on Beatport now!

Camo & Krooked, ‘Climax’ [Hospital Records]

This duo from Vienna is one of the most exciting new producers to come out of the drum & bass scene this year. I’m not usually a big fan of trance inspired d’n’b, but when it’s used in the right way, like ‘Climax’, I’m in it. Big tune. Keep your eyes peeled for our forthcoming collaboration, ‘Stand Up’, due out on Shogun in October.

Total Science & SPY, ‘Gangsta’ [Shogun Audio]

Total Science have brought themselves right back to the forefront of drum & bass as of late. Keeping things simple but bringing amazing vibes to their tracks is what it’s all about for these guys and that’s well documented here.

Calibre, ‘Judgement Day’ [Samurai Music]

Nice to see Calibre releasing a bunch of tracks again. This one in particular is very classic Calibre and is the kind of track that made me and thousands of other peeps fans. Samurai is representing drum & bass with pride in New Zealand. Shouts to Jeff.

Total Science, ‘Redlines’ [Critical Music]

One of my favourite tunes of the year. Beautiful music, rolling beats, lashings of sub, and topped with a lovely catch vocal. Blimey that sounded like a Marks & Spencer’s advert, lol.
