Weekend Weapons: David Alvarado
24 January, 2011 | 7.56AMThe American DJ, producer, and label head David Alvarado
has a career stretching all the way back to the early ‘90s, when he began recording for labels like Strictly Rhythm
and Plus 8’s house offshoot Definitive Recordings; over the years, he’s built up a solid discography of singles and albums for Peacefrog Records, NRK
, and Ovum Recordings
, while his own Bomb Records
imprint helped give a leg up to artists like Kenneth Graham, Eddie Amador, and Derrick Carter.
Now Alvarado returns to Ovum for a special collaboration with Luca Bacchetti
. Alvarado turns Bacchetti’s massive 2008 cut ”El Matador” into a chugging tribal excursion, while Bacchetti takes on Alvarado’s ”Klugh," originally released on Ovum back in 1999.
To celebrate the release, we asked Alvarado to share a few of his favorite tracks of the moment. Read on for his answers.
Maceo Plex, “Vibe Your Love” [Crosstown Rebels]
Crosstown Rebels is probably one of the labels that most kept me in suspense waiting to see what was next in 2010, this was by far worth waiting for all year. A strong way to end the year, and maybe the decade as well. Renewed my hope for the next decade.
The Timewriter, “Wasteland” [Neurotraxx Deluxe]
The Timewriter has never disappointed me. Keeping it simple and ass-shaking at the same time. Reminded me of Kenlou’s “The Bounce.”
Future Beat Alliance, “Machines Can Help” [Tresor]
A wonderful soundscape that reminded me of another time and place. Refreshing to hear people climb out of the box and not be afraid to feel something.
Martin Buttrich, “Back It Up” [Desolat]
One of those tracks that will be a staple for me. This track, a strobe light, and a basement, and you have all you need.
Spencer Parker & Ian Pooley, “Kinderteller” [Ovum Recordings]
Swinging and grooving track that crossed over all the lines and moved asses worldwide over the summer. Great track, bringing it back to what it’s all about.
Keinton, “Strip Poker (GummiHz Reduced Mix)” [Moscow Records]
This track reminded me of a classic Mood II Swing track… dark, deep, and swinging, with hints of Basic Channel. For me all the right elements, loved it.
Deniz Kurtel, “Yeah feat. Guest of Nature” [Crosstown Rebels]
2010 for me was all about getting back to basics, simplicity… we’re not building rockets here. Crosstown Rebels release some great, simple tracks that captured all the right stuff.
Cylon, “Multiface” [Tohuwabohu Records]
Another simple but effective recipe. This track just evolves at a great pace, like peeling back the layers of an onion… a great tech house track that moves that dancefloor.
Jerome Sydenham & Timo Garcia, “Mutualism” [Noir Music]
Back to the future… shades of another time but bringing in a new year and decade. Jerome is one of my favorite producers, constantly putting out the stuff that I love to bring out at peak time.
Sian & Funk D’Void, “Veins” [Soma]
Both of these guys I love individually, and together… add Soma and a track that sounds like the mothership was hovering and beaming you up… ah, brilliance!
