Weekend Weapons: Dave Seaman
Weekend Weapons: Dave Seaman
2 November, 2011 | 10.00AMRenaissance is back. The latest Renaissance Masters Series mix is helmed by Dave Seaman, who racks up his 10th mix for the label.
The double-disc mix is classic Seaman, folding together driving midnight techno and progressive house with swathes of melodic electro, and taking in everything from Flowers and Sea Creatures and Connan Mockasin to Layo & Bushwacka!, Henry Saiz & Marc Marzenheit, and Christian Smith.
We asked Seaman to share some of his current club favorites with us; read on for his selection.
Butch, “Big Futt” [Cecille]
I’ve been a big fan of Butch’s work for some time. He always makes interesting music, but this is his best in ages. A warped, booty-shaking piece of house music with cultured climatic surges that really lift the dancefloor without resorting to lowest common denominator kitchen sink bells and whistles. Top drawer.
Flowers & Sea Creatures, “A.M.” (Fred Everything’s Stripped Mix & Dubstrumental) [Buzzin’ Fly]
I fell in love with this when it first surfaced earlier this year, and it was first on my list for my Renaissance Masters compilation. The Ewan Pearson original production is something, but Fred Everything’s mixes work best on the floor. Perfect warm up gear and absolute class.
Connan Mockasin, “Forever Dolphin Love (Erol Alkan Rework)” [Phantasy]
Another one of the big tracks from my new Renaissance Masters compilation. Erol’s mix is a low-slung, bass-driven slab of uplifting disco house that showcases Mockasin’s otherworldly vocal magnificently. One that stands out from the crowd.
Fr(ohm)age, “Speaking With Those Who Cannot Speak” [Rebel Records]
A slice of modern, throbbing progressive house that twists and turns through a restless arrangement that cleverly keeps you on your toes whilst never missing a beat. Promising stuff from a name to watch.
Oliver Huntemann, “In Times Of Trouble” [Ideal Audio]
Lifted from his new album, this is a DJ tool of the highest order. A beast of a techno riff perfect for dropping in and out of sets that will leave the dancefloor begging for more. Peakk-time business.
Slam, “Black Arts” [Paragraph]
I love this. It doesn’t do a great deal, but the techy groove is so infectious I could loop it round and round all night. Proving that after 20 years in the business, the mighty Slam still have their finger perfectly on the pulse.
Tyson, “After You’re Gone (Joe Goddard Mix)”
After turning in one of the best tracks of the year with Valentina on the wonderful “Gabriel,” Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard is at it again, turning the soulfully haunting vocal from London-based singer/songwriter Tyson into a twisted disco monster. [Download it from Little White Earbuds here.]
