Weekend Weapons: Coyu

Weekend Weapons: Coyu

Barcelona’s Coyu is part of a new wave of Spanish talent that continues to swell; he and his his colleagues Uner and Edu Imbernon—and his labels Suara and Atypical Farm—are attracting worldwide attention for their fresh, Mediterranean take on house and techno.

With his latest single, ”Mike Loves the Horn”—a collaboration with Toronto’s Carlo Lio, now a fellow Barcelona resident—Coyu makes his debut appearance on Joris Voorn and Edwin Oosterwal’s Rejected label.

To mark the occasion, we asked Coyu to share some of his current faves—read on to check ‘em out.

Timo Maas & Brian Molko, “College 84 (&Me Remix)” [Cooking Vinyl]

&Me is probably my fav producer at the minute. All his productions are killers, and this remix for Timo Maas and Placebo’s singer Brian Molko is proof of his sweet current moment. It’s dark, seductive… Girls love it.

Kris Wadsworth, “Det Sound (KW’s Move Dat Ass Remix)” [Get Physical]

This track is a dancefloor big bomb! Wadsworth mixes old school and nu-generation sounds as well as mixing Chicago and Detroit. What a groove!

Ben Sims, “I Feel It Deep feat. Tyree Cooper” [Drumcode]

Ben Sims is an old school jackin master. His rare Chicago house sets are epic. “Smoke & Mirrors” is a great album, i’m in love with the energetic “I Wanna Go Back”, but the best track is “I Feel It Deep” along the legend Tyree Cooper. Proper high quality music.

Benny Rodrigues, “It’s A Spiritual Thing (Patrick Chardronnet Remix)” [Suara]

I always been a fan of Benny Rodrigues & Patrick Chardronnet stuff. When I signed this amazing tune by Dutch techno hero I thought Chardronnet could be a good remixer… and I was right! Deep and epic, the groove builds up, builds up… Never loses the tension. Yes. It’s a love song.

Stimming, “Challenge The Air” [Diynamic Music]

The talent of Martin Stimming is unstoppable. If you add a lovely guitar and sweet vocal to his usual amazing music, you get a fabulous, timeless track. I still remember playing this tune at the main Terrace of Space Ibiza this Summer as last track of my set. So beautiful.

Martin Patino, “Mindgames” [Suara]

I’m not a mega fan of that new trendy wave of indie-meets-disco-meets-deephouse-meets-whateverifitsoundscool. This wave is the new “minimal.” Although I LOVE some stuff (specially the timeless ones, like Permanent Vacation). “Mindgames” could be in this area of influence, but I’m in love with its harmonies, vocal and groove. It’s a great track and works super well on the floor.

Gesaffelstein, “The Lack Of Hope” [Turbo]

I love the dark and emotional way Gesaffelstein adds to his music. “The Lack Of Hope” is probably his best tune ever, although he makes top tunes all the time. I’m sure I will hear this great track in 20 years and I still will be in love with it as I am with all the timeless tunes. Magic.

DJ Hell, “U Can Dance feat. Bryan Ferry (Simian Mobile Disco Remix)” [International Deejay Gigolo]

This track brings me to some of the best moments I’ve had ever as DJ. It’s the kind of tune that you only can play in the right parties and the right moments. But if you find that right party and right moment, oh man, everything goes BOOM!
