Weekend Weapons…Cosmo Vitelli

Cosmo Vitelli [a] slides his way onto dancefloors with pristine Parisian style, but he is not, as his record label would have you believe, a disco cliché.

Despite being named after a strip-club owner from the cult 1976 film The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Benjamin Boguet does not have a mustache or smoke cigars.

He is however, one of the coolest cats in town, able to instill a chorus of finger snaps wherever the music of his burgeoning record label I’m a Cliché is played. The imprint’s status continues to grow thanks to dance music’s new found enthusiasm for disco, and the label’s wide-reaching house, techno, and electro goodies.

Cliché’s brilliant new compilation ‘Moments Of A Crisis’, showcases Cosmo’s rich and fruity palette, with sublime old school-sounding Chicago house cuts like Azari & III ‘Hungry (For The Power)’, sitting quite happily next to the funky breakbeat of Uncle O, or the pumping electro of Simian Mobile Disco. It’s the kind of musical jumble sale that keeps people coming back.

We begged Monsieur Boguet to reveal five of his current favourite dancefloor bombs, and he gladly obliged (after we threatened to smash his beloved disco ball to smithereens).

It’s a Fine Line ‘Grease’ [I’m a Cliché]

One of the reasons why it’s so cool to run a label is that you sometimes have the opportunity to release a track like ‘Grease’.

It’s A Fine Line, aka Ivan Smagghe and Tim Paris, made this hybrid mix of techno and almost naive rockabilly, and it’s a complete burner.

Matias Aguayo ‘Bo Jack’ (Instrumental) [Comeme]

Matias Aguayo’s brand new label, Comeme, have released three EPs so far that are an awesome mix of South American beats, baile funk, dark electro, and proto chicago house.

‘Bo Jack’ is the one I’ve played the most, but you should check out all of their releases!

Basic Soul Unit ‘The Stand’ [Philpot]

‘The Stand’ is Basic Soul Unit’s latest 12”. Both sides are great and I always find a space in my sets to put the acid disco of ‘The Stand’.

Discodeine ‘Invert’ (Parce Que Edit) [Because Musique]

Discodeine are in great shape at the moment. They have a huge track coming in September, which is their remix of the French band Villeneuve.

For now, this unreleased track, available on a French compilation, will please you. It’s Discodeine at their best.

Marc Houle ‘Meatier Shower’ [Minus]

A bit old - hey, it’s only from 2008 - but this is one of my fave tracks from last year.

When Minus’ Marc Houle re-interpretates Chicago house his own way, this is what he comes up with.
