Weekend Weapons…Christian Smith

Weekend Weapons…Christian Smith

When the going gets tough, blame it on Christian Smith [a]. As the perpetrator behind some of techno’s largest moments, Smith roams the club world providing ‘the big one’ to any DJ that needs it.

The Swedish DJ and producer might now live in sunny Sao Paulo, but don’t be fooled - Brazil’s laid-back vibes haven’t rubbed off on him one bit. His genre-hopping DJ sets encorporate everything from progressive house, to funky minimal, and chunky techno, and this year alongside his long-serving production partner John Selway he has released some major club destroyers, including the aptly titled ‘Move!’, and the frenetic ‘Work It’.

In July the pair released ‘Mistral’ on Bedrock Records, which is featured on John Digweed’s forthcoming ‘Bedrock Eleven’ compilation (as is another one of their unreleased tracks ‘Daytona’), and he has just released a new mix CD for Renaissance called ‘Platform’.

With Smith having had another phenomenal year, we asked him to reveal his current Weekend Weapons.

Christian Smith & Reset Robot ‘Elixir’ [Rekluse]

I made this track with Dave Robertson aka Reset Robot a few months back and it did damage at Global Gathering in the UK, Space in Ibiza, and Wire in Japan. It’s definately a peaktime festival stormer.

I must admit, however, that personally I prefer the Gary Beck remix over the original. It’s just so damn hypnotic and driving, I love it! Both versions work in different environments and I am very pleased with this record.

Alan Fitzpatrick ‘Reflections’ [Bedrock]

Digweed gave me this track a few months before it was commercially released and I had a great time playing this out. It’s one of those classic last tunes of the night.

Very musical, uplifiting, but not cheesy. I played this as the last tune this past weekend in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the kids were just melting. I think it’s Alan’s best work to date.

Steve Mac ‘After Sundown’ [Tronic]

The original is super fat chunky house music, and Anton Pieete’s remix is amazing. It’s one of those super groovy tracks that is not obvious but that totally rocks the floor. The groove just sucks in.

The original is kind of old school stabby big techno ala Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier and has more of a summer vibe.

Deetron ‘Zircon’ [Music Man]

Sam Geiser doesn’t put out a lot, but when he releases something it’s usually damn good! This track is dark, powerful, and very hypnotic.

It’s somewhere between Ame and Robert Hood. Proper deep techno!

Spooky ‘Internebula’ [Renaissance]

I have been a Spooky fan since their early 90s anthem ‘Little Bullet’. This is a peaktime, big room sounding track that is very powerful.

It’s good that some people are not shy to use more musical elements in their tracks. I’m kind of tired of all the shuffled tom and microtonic music that dominates many of the charts. This is different and original.

Trancesetters ‘The Search’ (Christian Smith Remix) [Tronic]

The original ‘The Search’ 12”

I’ve always loved the original of ‘The Search’, so I decided to license this track for my Tronic label and have a go at remixing it. It’s due out soon on Beatport.

It was a tough job because I was not given any parts and had to sample the original, but I think I pulled it off. It’s honestly been one of my biggest tracks of the summer.

I kept a lot of the elements similar to the original and just gave it a proper update. The crowds go mad and judging by the promotional feedback it will be a big crossover release.

Everybody from Dubfire to Beyer to Digweed, love it...wooohoooo! :)
