Weekend Weapons: Catalepsia
Weekend Weapons: Catalepsia
21 October, 2011 | 1.26AMWhat is it about the dark side that so attracts French techno producers? Perhaps it’s a reaction to the glitz of Guetta; instead of the silky French touch, much of the country’s underground could better be described as a Gallic smackdown, with sooty atmospherics and post-punk dread underscoring cold, metallic grooves.
That’s definitely the case with the latest release from Catalepsia, head of the Days Of Being Wild label. ”Les Seigneurs” offers a druggy, slow-motion groove that combines death-gurgle acid with dubby horns and more than a hint of early ‘80s Sheffield gloom; it’s scary and yet kinda sexy all at once. The Optimo Music artists Naum Gabo up the tempo and intensify the drums, resulting in a real nail-biter of a remix. Just the stuff for Halloween.
We asked Catalepsia (aka Jérome Bazzanella) to share a selection of his current faves, and he turned in a list that dovetails perfectly with his own productions, including tracks from Kill The DJ, Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space label, Throne Of Blood, and that fantastic new Death In Vegas record. Read on!
Battant, “Old School Baby” [Kill The DJ]
Always felt really close to the KTDJ familly. Love the production from Tim Paris and Ivan Smaghhe, aka It’s A Fine Line. For me it’s sounds like a perfect fusion between electronic sounds and a post-punk spirit.
Walls, “Into Our Midst” [Kompakt]
The kind of records which will stay in my box for a long, long time. It sounds old and modern at the same time. Can be used in a DJ set and listened at home too.
Franz Kirmann, “Spinner (Remain Remix)” [Days Of Being Wild]
Our biggest release so far on Days Of Being Wild by my partner in crime, Franz Kirmann (check his ambient / leftfield stuff on his own Photogram Recordings), remixed by Parisian artist Remain. Down to the bone, Depeche Mode-influenced sound. Slow, dark and dirty but still funky. All we need in a record!
Paradis, “Parfait Tirage” [Beats In Space]
First release from Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space label; it reminds me of the old Environ records. I like the sweetness and the French vocals. Music to make babies…
Metronomy, “The Bay (Erol Alkan’s Extended Rework)” [Because Music]
Typically the kind of “pop” band I’m not ashamed to love, and when on top it comes with such a rework. Waouwww. Big respect.
Clouded Vision, “Room 101” [Meant Records]
The kind of track I would have loved to produce. I’m a bit jealous from this one. Fantastic production from Matt Walsh and Steve Cook. They will sign a remix on my next EP on Days Of Being Wild ("Task Cards” EP / WILD 007).
Passarella Death Squad, Passarella Death Squad [Republic Of Desire]
Eponym LP from the London-based band. A masterpiece. Modern and gothic at the same time. Not much to add, a must-have.
Death In Vegas, “Your Loft My Acid” [Portobello Records]
One of my all-time favorite bands delivers a big, big returns. An instant classic.
Virgo Four, “It’s a Crime (Caribou Remix)” [Rush Hour]
I think that everything as already been said about this remix. Certainly one the top tracks of 2011, in my humble opinion.
Mugwump, “The Congregation Of Discalced Clerks” [Throne Of Blood]
Late 2010 track, but I keep playing it. One of my favorite “new” labels and my favorite Belgian producer.
