Weekend Weapons…Burnski
Weekend Weapons…Burnski
20 January, 2010 | 7.30AMThe North’s Burnski
was the youngest person ever to play at Leeds’ house music institution Back2Basics. He impressed the club’s promoters so much, that they offered him a residency. He was still only 20-years-old.
By 22 he had dropped an EP on Steve Bug’s prestigious deep house label Dessous, and continued his firecracker production career with releases on some of Europe’s key house and techno labels including Trapez, Morris Audio, 2020 Vision, and Immigrant.
Despite his age, Burnski’s sets are eclectic affairs that stretch across jazz, disco, minimal, electro, dub, house, and techno, a quality that has brought him slots at some of the world’s top clubs like London’s Fabric, Berlin’s Watergate, and Barcelona’s The Loft.
As this set of Weekend Weapons proves, Burnski is a committed underground dance music enthusiast obsessed with tracking down the perfect groove, a factor that might be attributed to his vinyl-only stance.
Read on to listen to his favourite dancefloor cuts of the moments.
Subb-an ‘The Vision’ [One Records]
This is the first release from the boys at Below in Birmingham. If you have been to their party you will know that it’s pretty special.
‘The Vision’ is a great track and perfect for my sets. I love how it’s so deep yet pumping, and still very musical. I don’t hear many tracks that can get that balance, and here it works a treat.
I look forward to hearing more from One Records.
Alex Picone ‘Mon Amour’ [Bass Culture Records]

One of my favourite labels at the moment is Bass Culture Records, a new one run by D’Julz who I have a lot of respect for.
The original always gets a great reaction. It comes with a great remix to, but for my sets the original is perfect.
A very simple, yet effective track. I played it in New York a couple of weeks back, and it was by far the biggest track of the night. The bassline keeps rolling along so well.
Tony Lionni ‘Running Away’ [Freerange]
This track is pretty special! When I first heard it, I got goosebumps. It’s the perfect track to finish your set at the end of a long night.
It’s a typical Tony Lionni
track, amazing. I really love his sound. The melodies are so good and effortless. When he introduces the new melody four minutes in or so, it really works. He can’t do a thing wrong at the moment.
Cheek ‘Venus’ (Sunshine People Remix) [Verstaile Records]
This is a classic. Everytime I play it someone comes over asking what it is. A really amazing record. I’ve got a lot of Pepe Braddock’s work, but I think this might just be his finest moment.
It has got a really funky edge to it, and when it drops after the vocal, it gets even better.
Sanasol ‘Tambourine Man’ (Christopher Groove Edit) [Fear of Flying]
I was originally a bit gutted when I got the 12-inch, as this edit wasn’t on there, so I had to visit Beatport which I very rarely do, but this was worth the trip!
The original is great, but this edit really takes it to the next level and beyond. It’s a riot tune and if things are bubbling, drop this and watch the crowd perish.
