Weekend Weapons…Andy Caldwell

Weekend Weapons…Andy Caldwell

Los Angeles’ Andy Caldwell [a] is unafraid of the limelight. A permanent blip on the American house music radar, he has pushed the sound forwards, both in the underground as a former king of San Francisco’s deep house scene (he was the goldenboy of OM Records and Naked Music for a while), and in the mainstream, where he has produced pop friendly house, won Grammys, and shared a stage with the late, great, James Brown.

As a classically trained pianist, trumpeter, songwriter, and producer, Caldwell’s approach to house is very musical and song-based - quite different to the club-centric, beats heavy grooves that dominate much of the scene. This can be heard on his brand new album ‘Obsession’, which has its feet firmly in the pop world.

As a DJ, Andy plays over 100 gigs per year so we asked the pretty boy to share his current crop of Weekend Weapons.

Meyland, Visti ‘Yes Maam’ (Trentemoller Mix) [Eskimo]

This has been out for a few months now, but I just picked it up recently and have gotten amazing crowd reactions.

It bridges the gap between tech and house so nicely, in the way only Trentemoller can do! I’ve been a fan of his for years now and he’s still kickin’ out the bangers - this one is no exception.

Gilbert Le Funk ‘Afrikantastique’ (David Tort Remix) [Fluential]

This one has been in my box since WMC, and it never fails to bring the house down. It mixes in so damn well and that synth hook is class.

David Tort is a guy to watch, he’s been killing it this past year and I’m really enjoying everything he does.

Andy Caldwell feat. Mr. V ‘It’s Guud’ (Original Mix) [Uno Recordings]

I’ve been playing this track for the better part of a year now and it has become a staple of my set. Mr V turned it out for the ladies on this one!

Seriously, they love this vocal, and btw, it mixes perfectly with ‘Afrikantastique’.

Wolfgang Gartner & Francis Preve ‘Yang’ [Toolroom]

I slept on this one when it was first released but picked it up recently and have been loving it. Housey vibes with old school techno flavors. It’s a different direction for Gartner but I’m a big fan of his and love this none the less.

Chocolate Puma, Bingo Players ‘Disco Electrique’ [Strictly Rhythm]

The SICK organ bassline never fails to bring the house down! I can mix this in at any point in my set and the whole room goes bananas. I’ve been opening my shows to it lately and it really sets the tone.

Andy Caldwell feat. Storm ‘Black Diamond Sky’ (Morgan Page mix) [Uno Recordings]

Morgan Page has been making some incredible music lately and I was really excited to have him remix my new single.  He killed the remix and I’ve been getting some great feedback on the dancefloor as well as in my podcast.  Big beats with a relentless driving synth bassline - what more could you want?  Oh yeah, a killer vocal!  I really love this track.

Hoxton Whores ‘Devil Toy’ [Toolroom]

I picked this up months ago but I don’t think it saw a full release until August. In any case it has been stapled to my set list for months now.

I like to mix the accapella to ‘Finally’ from K.O.T. in over the break. Nothing like a little retro, old school flava! The Hoxton Whores are on point on this.
