Wear Your Scars Like Medals

Sian [Aus Music]

Sian may be widely known for his densely textured, harmonic style, but for this raucous slab of techno terror, he’s given the orchestral maneuvers (as witnessed to great effect on his last outing for Aus, the magnificent ‘Apple Tree’) a temporary rest.

Working up in eminently mix-friendly fashion from a single linear thud, ‘Wear Your Scars Like Medals’ soon hits its stride with stomping rattles and a searing, hardcore-esque synth scrape that cuts through the groove like a sheet of molten metal.

Meanwhile, a raging, apocalyptic mid-section swells to bloated proportions, and though the track’s unbridled ferocity may be a bit much for deeper tastes, there’s no denying it’ll tear more hard-edged dancefloors to bits.

Remixer Roland Appel seems in a more aggressive mood than usual, too — although you wouldn’t have predicted it from the plaintive intro to his rework.

As with his 2007 hit ‘Dark Soldier’, Appel craftily changes key from major to minor for the central section of the track, switching from hazily optimistic vibes to sharp, angular Detroit-ish pressure without missing a beat.

It’s more restrained than the original, offering a cleaner alternative to Sian’s heavy-handed drama.

Another versatile winner from the Aus Music camp.
