We Know The Feeling: Velten Doering aka Dirty Doering (Berlin)

The third edition of our new ‘We Know The Feeling’ series returns to our Berlin office for a glimpse into the life of our tattooed resident rising superstar, Velten Doering, whom you may already recognize as Dirty Doering. He’s been making waves in the Berlin techno underworld, with recent tracks gaining massive praise and love from the biggest names—his recent release has been Sven Vath’s closing track at many a festival this summer.

However, despite his star growing brighter and brighter, around the Beatport offices Velten is just another part of the family: a music-loving mad man with an infectious laugh and a moustache that would make the porn industry jealous. Check below for a glimpse into the world of Velten, and his penchant for good whiskey, better music, and debaucherous clubbing.

Velten, tell us about yourself. What do you do here at Beatport, and how long have you been with the company?

I’ve been here since 2008 and I’m working as encoder.

Which means...

I serve as the middle point between label management and our customers—handling the vast amounts of music that arrive each day, assigning genres, ensuring all information is accurate, and ultimately uploading the content to the store.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Leipzig, formerly in East Germany, and I moved to West Germany in 1986, because my mom had a lot of problems there. And then, a couple years later, the Wall fell down. It was unbelievable. My mom came in my room and told me what had happened.

Where else have you lived?

Before I came to Berlin, I grew up in Baden-Baden, a small town in the southwest of Germany. After my education ended in ‘99 I decided to go to Berlin.

How did you discover electronic music? Who inspired you?

In the beginning, I got the music from my neighbour. He was older and had a lot of techno (or “tekno") music. It was amazing, because for me techno was the sound of the future. I was 14 years old.

Tell us your earliest musical memory involving dance music.

Pyrate’s ‘The First Voyage’ EP on VooDoo Records was the first record I bought.

Pryrate was quite a hard trance act, even for the mid ‘90s era—do you feel like your musical tastes have changed since then?

Yes, of course. I mean, musical tastes will change all the time. In the ‘90s electronic music was really young, fast, and simple. Me too. Now, electronic music is more adult. In the beginning I was a techno, trance, and drum & bass fan. All these genres were rough and fast. Now I am older and I like the groovy sounds better. It’s important that I have a good feeling. And in the end, it’s the same good feeling that I have now or that I had in the ‘90s. Good music, good feelings.

What is the best part of life in Berlin?

Personal freedom and lots of young people.

What do you consider to be the worst part of life in Berlin?

Dog sh*t.

Do you have a preferred style of dance music to listen to?

My favorite music is when a lot of girls are dancing, whichever genre or club.

How about outside electronic music, can you tell us some other musical influences and artists you’re into?

At home I prefer jazz, soul, and funk classics, and for the summer I love reggae music.

Tell us a little bit about your musical endeavors—any recent DJ gigs?

I am resident in Bar25 and I have played in most of the clubs in Berlin—Tresor, Watergate, Arena, Maria, Weekend, Homesweethome, Bachstelzen… Also at some festivals (Melt!, Fusion, Monkbreakz) as well as some nice clubs all over Europe. Copenhagen, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Naples, France, Munich, Köln… This month I play at Fabric London, the Green Sun Festival (Munich), and in a 500-year-old cloister in Thüringen.

And what about productions?

My most recent release is the ‘Loco Remixes’ EP, on the label Damage Music Berlin. Sven Väth played the Vince Watson remix as his last track at Love Family Park 2010. It was amazing.

And I’ve produced a remix for Chilly Gonzaels’ ‘I Am Europe’. It’s out now on Boysnoize Record. The next release is the Bar25 closing release. It’s called ‘I Would’, and it’s out September 3, with great remixes by Matthew Styles, Acid Pauli, and Marcus Meinhardt. And Kai Kurve directed a great video for it—check it out.

What is your production setup like?

I use Ableton and Logic.

Preferred tools for DJing?

Traktor.

They call you Dirty Doering… why are you so dirty?

Good question, next question. :-)

Can you tell us one electronic song that best matches your personality?

Caribou‘s ‘Leave House’, from his album ‘Swim’. One of my favorites this year.

Can you tell us one of your favorite memories involving dance music?

The closing of the legendary club Omen in Frankfurt. This was Sven Väth’s club and at the closing weekend it was so full inside and in front of the club that they called the police and the police blocked off the street. They moved the whole soundsystem out into the street and did a great open-air party right there in Frankfurt’s financial district.

You’ve been a longtime fixture in the Bar25 scene. Can you explain why people from all over the planet flock there?

I mean, it has something to do with summer. You are outside and get more than a dancefloor with techno. It’s a place for adult children. And every year they have some new things. This year for example, the spa pool area and the Johannesburg area. You can compare Bar25 with the Gallic village in Asterix and Obelix. They won’t leave the area as well.

What is the longest amount of time you’ve spent in the venue without leaving?

Over a week.

Wow, they should call you “Enduring Doering”! Best Bar25 memory?

Girls. Boys. Pizza. Burgers. Rumsteak. Pool. Massage. Volleyball. Cinema. Theatre. Whiskey. Nature, and over seven years, no tinnitus. :-)
